Employers are using the TFW program for occupations that they barely considered a few years ago. Case in point: administrative assistants. Companies were approved to hire > 3,500 of these positions last year, an increase of 3,090% from 2016.

*MEDIA CALLOUT* It’s rare but it happens: Your bank closes your account w/ minimal warning. There is no explanation and no way to appeal the decision. If this happened to you/someone you know, @ealini & I would love to hear about it. Please DM or email [email protected]

Here's an example: the Ontario Disability Support Program. Payments are now adjusted for inflation, but that follows a lengthy period of erosion. Adjusted for inflation, total annual incomes in 2022 were down 34% from a peak in the early 90s.

The interaction of public and private disability insurance policies is a critical issue- a proposed amendment to the Canada Disability Benefit bill to address this was not adopted by the government. It should be addressed in federal-provincial agreements.
A key amendment to the Canada Disability benefit and any other type of disability benefit for example a WorkSafe disability benefit or Car Accident benefit should be that all Providers not be able to offset claw back payment from other providers. Especially private insurers.

And, if I might offer a political prediction: if govt changes next year, the inclusion rate doesn't go back to 50. Other taxes changes may occur, but not this one. There's solid reasons to treat dividends, cap gains, interest, etc., similarly.

Inclusion rate or tax rate? Taxes on wages vs capital gains? Lots of confusion out there. It's simple: $1 in wages. Top marginal tax rate = 53%. Keep $0.47. $1 in corporate profit --> 26% corporate tax rate = $0.74 distributed as capital gains --> 50% inclusion rate = $0.37 taxed at 53% personal. All in, roughly 46% tax rate overall. Keep $0.54. Better than wages (and better than interest or dividends). At 67% inclusion: roughly 52% tax overall for capital gains. So keep $0.48. Close to treatment of wages! (And also close to dividends and interest!) Want lower taxes? Great. Lower tax rates. Inclusion rates can be used to better equalize treatment of capital gains vs other income sources, as the budget does.
