Is it worth putting an anti-aircraft complex, active protection, and other elements in the style of a small S-300 on every tank? In the 80s, the United States thought about it and proposed a different approach – a special vehicle, BODYGUARD, that would carry all these clever devices. The BODYGUARD concept is a specialized platform for ensuring security and protecting an area, designed to accompany convoys, tank platoons, and companies. The main task of the vehicle is to create a defensive perimeter using an optoelectronic suppression complex, electronic warfare, decoys, masking screens, and active protection systems. The vehicle has a total weight of 15 to 17 tons and is operated by a crew of two, but the project provided for the possibility of fully robotic or autonomous operation. Survivability is ensured through the use of lightweight modular composite armor, which can be adapted to specific combat missions, as well as through multispectral signature reduction technologies. To carry out the mission, the vehicle is equipped with 360-degree all-around surveillance equipment, including laser and radar warning systems, acoustic detectors, and an identification friend-or-foe system.
