Modern slavery is a crime that is commonly said to 'hide in plain sight'. Deputy Commissioner @ellie_vt says that we all have a duty of care to identify potential victims of modern slavery and report it. Read more here 👇 surrey-pcc.gov.uk/tackling-m… #AntiSlaveryDay

A pleasure to officially open the #cpc2026 youth zone with @Conservatives Party Chairman @kevinhollinrake yesterday morning. The 17th year of the Youth Zone, and having been supporting them since the beginning I think that means I’m officially no longer a young person 🙈

🇺🇸 The Boatlift That Was Bigger Than Dunkirk At 10:45 a.m. on September 11, 2001, a Coast Guard lieutenant named Mike Day keyed a radio in New York Harbor and said the only sentence that mattered. “All available boats. This is the United States Coast Guard. Anyone wanting to help with the evacuation of Lower Manhattan, report to Governors Island.” The boats were already coming. The bridges were closed. The tunnels were closed. The subways were dead. South of the towers, hundreds of thousands of people had nowhere left to walk. Some jumped into the Hudson. Some stood on seawalls that were never meant to be docks and waited for anything that floated. Dunkirk took nine days to pull 338,226 Allied soldiers off a beach in 1940. On 9/11, roughly 800 mariners on about 150 vessels moved as many as 500,000 civilians off Manhattan in about nine hours. Ferries. Tugs. Dinner boats. Pilot boats. Yachts. A retired fireboat. Rubber dinghies that held two people. The largest water evacuation in history. NY Waterway did not wait for the official call. After the second plane hit, the whole fleet moved. Captain Rick Thornton nosed his ferry against a seawall that was not a slip and started taking people off. Some of them he pulled out of the river. His company alone carried about 158,000 people to Jersey City, Hoboken, Weehawken, Brooklyn, and Queens. On a normal Tuesday they carried 34,000. The Staten Island Ferry moved more than 50,000 people and came back the other way with water, bandages, and men who still had work to do in the dust. The old fireboat John J. Harvey, already retired, tied up near the Museum of Jewish Heritage, took civilians off the seawall, then pumped water when the hydrants downtown died. Lt. Day later admitted what the day required. “I broke more rules that day than probably I’ve enforced in my whole Coast Guard career.” In raw numbers it was bigger than Dunkirk. No boat went down. By nightfall the southern tip of Manhattan had been emptied by people who were not on anyone’s list of heroes when the morning started. They were tug captains. Ferry deckhands. Pilots. A lieutenant with a microphone. Ordinary boats answering one sentence. All available boats.

This is something I’m genuinely passionate about, and am delighted is now up and running in Surrey. This has already saved lives around the country, and will continue to do so. Please do encourage anyone you know who has served to sign up, anywhere in the country!
“It could save a life” Deputy PCC @ellie_vt is urging current or former UK Armed Forces members to sign up to the Forcer Protocol which is now live in Surrey. The Protocol helps police find military personnel & veterans who go missing. Find out more👇 surrey-pcc.gov.uk/deputy-com…

@ZackPolanski - this is magnificent. Three things I can’t deny: 1. It is a video. 2. You are wearing a jacket. 3. Then you aren’t. 4. Then you are again. Unfortunately that’s where the accuracy ends. A few corrections for you: Peter Thiel is not our CEO. Alex Karp is — and has been for 20+ years. (A lifelong Democrat, for anyone keeping score.) We are not a “spyware company.” Spyware is malware. Malware is illegal. Calling a software company spyware is, technically, defamatory (don’t worry, we are not suing). We don’t build surveillance technology. We build software that helps organisations make sense of data they already hold. Not the same thing. There was no “private tour” of our HQ. There was a public photocall to which the media came. Hence, why there are so many pictures of the event. Our MOD contract is not “the biggest defence contract in UK history.” Ajax armoured vehicles = £5.5bn. Dreadnought submarines = £31bn. We’re grateful for the work, but let’s keep a sense of scale. We have no more access to NHS data than Microsoft has to the contents of your Word documents. I think you know this by now. We don’t have access to patient medical records. Same story. I agree that “nothing matters more than our health.” Which makes it worth reminding you of what Palantir’s software is actually doing in the NHS right now: ->110,000 additional operations ->15% fewer delayed hospital discharges ->7% more patients finding out within 28 days whether they have cancer Respect again for what you did with that jacket.

Always a pleasure to join pass out parades and chat to new recruits. I like to ask them why they joined policing. This group had lots of relatives in policing, and one told me she joined because she wanted to feel like she was making a difference and helping people every day ❤️
📢 Quick march! 👮‍♀️👮‍♂️ Deputy Commissioner @ellie_vt has welcomed the newest cohort of @SurreyPolice officers at their passing out parade. Congratulations to all, and good luck in your careers with the Force!

Bishop Andrew embodied all that was good about the Christian Church and he will be sadly missed by all in Guildford and far beyond. My thoughts and prayers are with all who knew him and loved him.
It is with great sorrow that I received news that the Rt Revd Andrew Watson, Bishop of Guildford, has died. Andrew was a man of deep Christian faith who lived his life in the service of Christ and others. In the face of death, he demonstrated a calm reassurance of God’s saving grace. Over four decades of ministry, Andrew made an enormous contribution to the life of the Church of England – and, through his concern for Anglicans and other Christians around the world, the global church. He was a gentle man and generous with those who held differing theological views. He will be greatly missed by not just his family and friends, but by the whole church. At this time of grief and loss, I hold Beverly and their sons and daughters in my prayers, asking that God would comfort and strengthen them. I pray too for Andrew’s friends, colleagues and all those whose lives he touched. May Andrew rest in peace and rise in glory. bit.ly/3Nf97yr
