So, in the mind of the French rioter, the ideal seems to be to destroy the institutions of the state while looting its luxury shops for keeps. The Republic must fall, apparently, but the Louis Vuitton, Celine or perhaps Dior handbag is worth saving. Capitalism is denounced in the abstract and raided with enthusiasm in the particular. There is something wonderfully French about smashing the system while carefully selecting the best things the system has produced. The cradle-to-grave welfare state is impossible even in its theoretical construction. How do you ever satiate a cradle that now demands an iPhone? And, eventually, who pays for it? And if you refuse, the buggers will loot the Apple Store…🤷🏾‍♂️ What is most extraordinary is that people who profess indifference to materialism will commit a crime for the privilege of wearing its badges. They may despise consumerism, but apparently not enough to leave the handbags behind. The birthplace of post modernism is showing us the way. 😏
