For a long time, food and medicines in this country were extremely toxic. Like, actually murderous.
Despite that, progress in regulating them was very slow and arduous work.
The FDA isn’t perfect. But wow do we need it. Here’s a thread on its history and what existed before 👇

One of the most poignant medieval documents was written on this day in 1429.
Written by Joan of Arc, it requested gunpowder from the citizens of Riom to support her military campaigns.
And at the end, for the first time, Joan signed her own name.

The Princess of Wales is missing and the spare Prince is in exile and the King is treating his cancer with herbs. If this were the 1300s France would be looking to invade.

A blast from the past: A few years back I stood outside Wells Cathedral for a full day and photographed the impact of the light on the front facade. I was amazed at the outcome - at how a single entity could morph and change under the changing light. #thread

Today is Martinmas, the feast of St Martin of Tours, a major festival in medieval Europe on the cusp of winter. St Martin is the patron saint of soldiers; he's often shown on horseback, sharing his cloak with a poor man who was 'naked against the winter cold'.

‘Ireland (as I was told at the age of six) was a holy island, it was the Land of Saints and Scholars. Which meant nothing to me until, for one long five minutes, I thought humanity might soon be finished.’

Thought I couldn't get any more furious about #PartyGate but Jingle and Mingle has done it. The sheer unbridled arrogance and recklessness of it. While all the time, this was the lonely reality for one of my lovely readers. Somebody who responsibly followed the rules.💔

Hatch, the dog who went down with Henry VIII’s ship, the Mary Rose.
Hatch was the ship’s ratter and probably spent most of his life on board. He was brought to the surface in 1982 and how has pride of place in the wonderful @MaryRoseMuseum
