Part 2/ continued Let’s talk about PheemPan’s dynamics. Pheem is a ‘quote and quote’ dominant character and Pan is the submissive. This dynamic is very common in romantic literature, it has been depicted many times but Lena especially brought a new meaning to the dominant role. There are various times where we can see how Pheem enjoys being the one in control, this is not even an intentional thing, this is just who Pheem is! And Pan although not as submissive in the series adapts to Pheem and her nature quite quickly due to wanting to be ‘looked after’ she understands who Pheem is, what she wants, and takes on the role. Many people may question why someone like Pan would stay with someone like Pheem, but the simple answer is - she comes to like it. Her low self esteem definitely does not help, but unfortunately this is what entices her and keeps her to stay. She likes being the ‘good girl’ she likes ‘getting Pheem’s permission’ , she likes the praise, and she likes being rescued like a damsel in distress. Pan is an embodiment of someone strong, someone who wants to save everyone else but when Pheem comes along she changes that for her. For the first time she’s the one who is being saved! This is why psychologically you can understand why she falls for Pheem and eventually falls victim to toxic love, which inturn lends her to be someone who internalizes lots of Pheem’s anger in herself. By the end she does realize the pitfalls of this dynamic but it takes some distance and Pheem’s Dad to accept her for her to fully realize it. I wanted to really mention this dynamic because I think many people don’t understand what was depicted here. Pheem’s anger and control because of her Mother but also her personality in wanting to dominate, which eventually leads to her growth by accepting Pan and stops judging people of that profession because of love and Pan’s strength and hero complex being overcome by allowing herself to be somewhat subdued by love and reflection. The dom vs sub is not something new but pls love did give its own retelling of what it means between these two women The director- I want to give my kudos to the director. She upped her game from MSZ, there were many stylistic choices she went with, from Pan being told to hold back in her delivery in the early half of the show, from Pheem and her interactions with her Father. I feel she did a superb job at the subtle things! The cinematography- there were some episodes where genuinely got lost in PheemPan’s world. I like how some of the shots were giving movie production and some were more simplistic but overall my favorite scenery and settings- where the times in the club and the times outside. The acting- now I have talked about Lena and Miu’s acting a lot throughout the entire airing but I would like to give it another shout out. I really truly believed the characters loved each other and that’s all down to LenaMiu, chemistry is not something that can be taught but getting lost in an act, making a relationship believable is not an an easy task and their were times where I genuinely thought I was watching a real couple. I would also like to mention the little intricacies, the facial expressions, putting their bodies on the line and their all into it. When they were mad, happy, conflicted and all. And finally the plot- was it a super complicated and complex plot line, no but it was a very interesting and fulfilling story. It was compelling from beginning to end and I genuinely did not have an ounce of boredom. I am also super happy that we got to raise awareness about what sex workers have to to go through , from being pimped, from being used, from being judged by family and friends, from society, from police. This boom and series was genuinely eye opening for me. My final rating is 7.5/8 out of 10. Let’s talk about Pls love. My final review for the entire series. When I first heard CH3 would be adapting a novel with very heavy themes, dark topics, taboo and controversial themes with intense sex scenes, I was genuinely curious in how they would adapt and what direction they would go. After reading the novels the first book and the special I was pleasantly surprised by how the author delved into the judged sex workers and what they have to go through. How a rich and scorned person like Pheem viewed Pan the escort and how Pan being in this line of work resulted in multiple cases of being used and looked down upon by not only society but the very people she loved. The first episode - this imo is the most important episode of an entire series, this is what sets the scene, what gets people invested and CH3 absolutely smashed the first episode. The change in how PheemPan first met was fantastic and the sex after two days just showed how intense their relationship is, which led up to episode two… The second episode was like a 180, their relationship was spun on its head and we saw the passionate and dominant Pheem take the reins in a more assertive and typical toxic way! This imo was something that cemented Pheem’s character. She is spoilt, sexually driven and possessive, from that moment we see that Pan takes on fully the role of being the submissive.
