It is true that instead of hiring one person for the job now it could possibly be several! (Clearly the solution is to be a multi-instrumentalist to keep costs down ๐ฅฒ)

So many more thoughts around the current hot topic but my tldr can really be
1. Have fun and you do you!
2. But consider embracing being human and learn to love the journey of artistry and performance!
3. Go practice!

I think folks are also allowed to express those preferences without being perceived as elite (because going back to my very first response the intention is quite the opposite!)

Thereโs no right answer, as I mentioned it really does boil down to expectation and preference at the end of the day. To me, itโs not really a criticism of a creator but rather the trend as a whole (echoing the sentiment of redefining standards, again if it makes ppl happy by -

is terribly restricting, and SHOULDN'T be the standard ๐

everything polished and overproduced in every aspect just feels like the antithesis. I am not condemning people for chasing that sound, just that overall, the framing of what 'karaoke' should be, as defined by the very top industry trends/singers which TEND to be overproduced-

in expectation.
When a viewer's expectation is to perceive the creator with authenticity, that's when these conflicting feelings can come up. I'm very obv on the 'embrace the natural' - karaokes to me are a space to have fun and improve your skills, and this trend to make -

I do really think it's because of what is 'expected' in a karaoke setting that gives rise to this divide though (and this expectation can swing so widely btwn KR and EN audiences, even among individuals, for ex.) The disingenuous feeling comes up precisely bc of that difference -

only one that's actually an actual product of the singer's performance. The other two I tend to think of as more constraints of the performing space and/or genre. Lots more thoughts about this but I think the discourse is healthy!

especially true in a karaoke context where I'd expect more natural vocals to come through, though I totally get that not everyone agrees!
On the points re: autotune, EQ and compression, I don't think these are completely fair comparisons given out of the three, pitch is the -

It's definitely more along the lines of embracing the human-ness of the performance! imo the imperfections are like brushstrokes on a canvas - sure you could smooth it til you can't tell how the paint was applied, but the brushstrokes themselves are part of the story. This is -

where's the push and drive to improve?
(tangentially the classical sphere gets a rep of being elitist and what not...but to a certain extent I do think this kind of overproduction is not acceptable precisely bc when we perform there's nothing to hide behind excpt your own skill)
