A Duke freshman couldn't afford $60,000 a year in tuition. So she started doing porn. Then a classmate recognized her. In 2013, Miriam Weeks was 18. Her parents covered the first month or two. After that, tuition cost about $4,300 a month. In the video below, she explains why her family couldn't afford it: "On paper we make so much money that we're not eligible for all these benefits. But in reality our families can't pay $60,000 in tuition each year." The only loans available to her carried 11% interest. Her parents would have had to co-sign. As a waitress, she says, she earned less than $400 a month. Her first adult film scene paid about $1,200. "I've made between 25 and 30 videos, and at the rate I'm going, I've made enough to pay for a year." In January 2014, a fellow Duke student identified her to his fraternity brothers. Her identity spread quickly, and she began receiving death threats. "At first it was so bad that I didn't want to get out of bed in the morning. I literally just wanted to pack up my bags, cry and go home." She later appeared on The View, CNN and in Rolling Stone. Lifetime eventually made a movie about her story. Her father had a different reaction: "My dad is purely just angry that I've ruined porn for him." Weeks says she left the industry in late 2015 and stopped discussing the experience.
