Immigrants make up a large share of the homebuilding workforce. Without them, our national housing shortage would be even worse. And…contrary to popular myths about immigrants taking jobs, these immigrants complement rather than substitute for native-born construction workers.

This is very cool. Highly complementary to this work on schools. journals.uchicago.edu/doi/ab…
Not sure if it's in "the wild" anymore, but it's it's really out there: doi.org/10.3368/jhr.1023-131… We look at different dimensions of teacher quality and how they differentially influence different student outcomes.

Freedom of movement makes it easier to undermine authoritarian regimes and boost global GDP. Let people move from where output is low to where output is high and help expand output there. Often there isn't a GDP penalty if they were unemployed/under employed before moving.

If capital/goods can move (and yes they should be able to because it makes almost everyone's lives better), people should also be able to move as a response to changes in the market. Freeing capital but not people means that the capital/goods can be optimized but labor can't.

I think I'd buy the bull case for Harris a bit more if she hadn't rehired so many of the Biden people.

When YIMBY-skeptics complain that developers skew much of their building toward the high end of the market, what they’re often not seeing is that there are a lot of regulations pushing them to do that. Minimum lot sizes are a big one on this, particularly in suburban areas.

So then what happens is that someone with a limited budget walks up to the deli trying to buy a basic turkey/cheese for lunch and the only sandwiches available are super fancy sandwiches on 8 slices of bread. The 8 slices of bread rule killed the starter sandwich. 6/7

Do drivers who get e-bikes drive less? Where cycling networks are ample, the answer is yes. Qi Sun et al. explain. One policy implication: where cycling networks are poor, public funds now subsidizing battery-electric cars would often be better spent on cycling accommodations.

Trump did not revive manufacturing or reduce crime, but he did do this.

Manolo Betancur says today his small bakery, located in one of Charlotte's most diverse neighborhoods, is just two minutes away from “the center of the war on diversity and minorities.” “If Donald Trump, J.D. Vance wins this November, everything I have built is at risk.”

We need to turn around North Carolina's rural economy, which has fallen behind during the last 20 years. In honor of my opponent's 5 terms in this seat, here are 5 reasons this race matters even if you AREN'T a farmer:

I think people working in Democratic Party politics professionally need to start thinking a little bit less about gaming out the 2024 nomination and a little bit more about their personal and institutional credibility. Doubling down on deception is a terrible look.

Today's forecast update is out. More of the same -- though, if you squint, Biden is at his lowest number yet, at a 27% chance of winning the Electoral College vs. 35% pre-debate. natesilver.net/p/nate-silver…

The notion the race hasn’t changed since the debate just isn’t an accurate depiction of reality, even based on purely quantitative factors. Because of statistical variation, you’ll get SOME polls showing a BIG Biden drop and others showing no change. But there's a signal here.

Polling and data are good, but if you can’t understand why there is upside to nominating a candidate who is capable of engaging in routine extemporaneous speaking relative to one who can’t I don’t think starting at spreadsheets is going to help you.

Idea: Members could respond to the information they are receiving with corrective action designed to alter the trajectory of events.
One Democratic insider tells me that members have been briefed on polling that shows House Democrats could lose as many as 20 seats “We were supposed to win the House,” the source said Four months to go …

The rise in grocery prices over the past few years has in fact been painful. It’s still true that imposing a 10% tax on imported food, fertilizer, and farm equipment while deporting a large share of farm workers would make things worse not better.
Replying to @mattyglesias
As if current inflation isn’t doing that already. People see how little they come back with from the grocery store for the same amount of money as in years past.
