Backlash is inevitable when the AI leaders are debating QALY equivalence between shrimps and our unborn descendants and the people being displaced by it are writing like this. thebaffler.com/salvos/paid-p…

The best arg for banning Chinese open source models is like the arg for patents: grant a monopoly to reward R&D at the frontier. Patents work well for pharma but not for fashion. What do you do about AI, which has the R&D reqs of pharma but the shelf life of fashion?

Has there ever been a Streisand effect as strong as demoting Pluto? My kids who were born 15 years after it was re-classified couldn't tell you a thing about Neptune but are obsessed with Pluto.

After a few weekends of testing, i have discovered my Clawdad constant: # of claudes running + # of children supervised at the same time = 6

Related: why do all kid dentists baby talk to my kids? “We’re going to give you some sleepy juice to buzz buzz the sugar bugs away” 🤮
My vocabulary level when speaking to my 2yo and 5yo children is somewhere around “smart undergraduate”.

This makes my kids more scared of the dentist. A man who intends to put sharp objects in their mouth is talking like an idiot. I wouldn't trust him either

In an alternate universe where DOGE had been the one to uncover massive terrorist-funding fraud by immigrants in Tim Walz’s state, how much faster would humans get to mars?

Montessori schools are magical. One teacher can deliver a top tier, personalized education to 25+ kids aged 3-6. But it's an open question how to replicate Montessori magic for older students. Schools like GT are betting that AI tutors is the answer. I'm skeptical... 🧵
*The* pedagogical problem of schooling—(insofar as schooling is a serious endeavor at all)—is homogeneity of instruction across 20ish very different students. This is an intrinsic feature of the age-old teacher-in-front-of-classroom model, made worse by modern equity frameworks.

You can't just plop a box of Montessori materials in your local public school and suddenly have a bunch of kindergartners learning 3rd grade math. So I'm betting it will require both new tech and new school structures to get kids to CARE.

It's tough, but I'm hopeful that startups like @primer (in a position to reinvent school structures and develop tech) and @synthesischool (the only(?) ed-tech that has figured out how to make kids CARE) will figure it out before my kids are age out of the Montessori magic.

Fewer farmers but more chefs
Software engineers are highly-paid farmers, tending their crops by hand. We just invented the combine harvester. The world is going have a lot more food and a lot fewer farmers in very short order.

As a father of a kindergarten math learner, I have to ask that we keep the penny. The negative seignorage is subsidizing an invaluable pedagogical tool.
