Thanks @JCI_insight ! So excited to publish our work on #myeloid IL1 receptor in #glomerulonephritis. @aces_duke @Duke_Anesthesia @DukeKidney
Presenting a novel axis that can fine-tune the immune response to glomerular and tubule cell damage: Jamie R. Privratsky @JamiePrivratsky & team @DukeKidney @Duke_Anesthesia identify a novel myeloid cell-endothelial cell immunoregulatory axis, supporting a model whereby myeloid IL-1R1 activity constrains ER stress–mediated EBI3/IL27 secretion, thereby attenuating type I IFN expression in kidney endothelial cells and ameliorating autoimmune nephritis. The figure shows anti-IFNAR1 therapy abrogates kidney injury after NTS nephritis in mice lacking IL-1R1 specifically in myeloid cells (bottom); littermate controls (top). #AKI #Nephrology #kidney #macrophage

This baseball field has been sitting dormant for 15 years. Not in some forgotten town. In Menlo Park, California, 10 minutes from some of the most valuable companies on earth. A full size diamond sat here, and then it just stopped. No games. No kids. 15 years of dirt and chain link! The park itself opened in 1936, one of the oldest in San Mateo County. Ohlone land first, then part of the Flood estate. The county built it as a public park during the Depression and then it went essentially untouched from the 1980s until now. Everything around this diamond has been rebuilt in the last year. New courts, new pump track, new picnic areas. The ballfield was supposed to be part of it. It got cut and it is still unfunded. I played high school baseball on this field. I have been working to bring it back for years and I am reviving this project now and getting after it. We are going for funding in January. In one to three years there will be baseball played on this field again. Mark my words. One video a week until we break ground. Baseball Back to Flood. Major alcohol study just released (after unexplained delay from HHS): Even 1 drink per day linked to higher risks of serious illness & premature death - including liver cirrhosis, certain cancers, and injuries. No net health benefits found at any level. This taxpayer-funded review adds to evidence that alcohol harms start low. It’s sparking fresh questions about past U.S. dietary guidelines and potential industry influence. Key takeaway: Less is better for long-term health! statnews.com/2026/06/09/supp…

Why do our organs have opioid receptors? Perhaps it is an part of an endogenous signaling system that protects from organ injury. Recent collab with @DetlefObal, Loren Smith and Andrew Notarianni on the cover of Anesthesia & Analgesia! DOI: 10.1213/ANE.0000000000007707

This mind-bending @nejm trial randomized septic shock patents to A-line vs cuff BP monitoring The signal showed that outcomes were actually worse in those randomized to A-line. By a bit. So at least cuff monitoring is non-inferior. I find that I am using A-lines less and less with patients on vasoactive meds. What about you? nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NE…
