Hey now, look who just published a paper on a shared GPU cloud built from idle Macs! @Apple researchers have built Minions, a distributed inference network already used by multiple internal teams to put idle Apple Silicon GPUs to work. Glad to see the Mothership thinking @HeavyMetalNet thoughts: connect the machines you already have and put their available compute to work. The paper closes with a clarion call that sounds very familiar: “If idle macOS devices across organizations—or potentially across the global community—can be securely federated, they could form a massive, shared GPU resource pool that benefits the broader ecosystem.” Rock on! 🤘🏽 tomshardware.com/tech-indust…

BREAKING: Scientists develop technology that allows people to digitally transmit smells across the world, potentially bringing scent to phone calls, video chats, & social media.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The claimed technology is an early research prototype from Ohio State University capable of transmitting data for only five specific scents via custom wearable devices, not phones or ready for everyday remote communication. newscientist.com/article/259518… cnet.com/science/new-ai… science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

Thank you Apple TV for the Tenzing movie. I read his autobiography when I was a kid and actually met him when visiting Darjeeling when I was a little older (I was basically tongue tied). I helped build a free hospital in Nepal years later & was pleasantly surprised to get a reach out from the Edmund Hillary foundation.

ketamine-assisted woolgathering is what we’re here for
You Can See Everything, while completely unremarkable in every way (it’s reality television), did supply me with an opportunity to lean over to my friend and whisper “this is why I left California” when, two hours into the drably staged, monotone Kabuki of fake autism (actually substance abuse and narcissism, but the most boring varieties of both), the monotone, fake-autistic Nathan Fielder marvels at the monotone, fake-autistic Elizabeth Holmes’ feigned inability to understand a simple joke, something I personally had to endure hundreds of times when dealing with this (exceedingly common) strain of Cali-poisoned “savant” whose entire pathology is that they’re just not very bright. A nice little blip of insight wrested from three hours of ketamine-assisted woolgathering I wish I never got involved with in the first place.
