European aviation authorities faced a second major wave of bomb threats on Thursday, 5th November, as passenger aircraft travelling between several countries were diverted, escorted by military fighter jets or subjected to emergency security inspections. At least 27 flights were affected, according to Reuters, with incidents reported across France, Italy, Belgium, Bulgaria, Poland, Austria and other European countries. #EUToday eutoday.net/europe-aviation-…

Lieutenant General Christian Freuding will become Germany’s highest-ranking military officer in February 2027, assuming command responsibility during the country’s largest defence expansion in decades. His experience directing military assistance to Ukraine provides Berlin with a commander familiar with modern drone warfare, but the challenge will be translating battlefield lessons into operationally ready German forces. #DefenceMatters @GermanyNATO defencematters.eu/christian-…

Polish security services have charged six people over an alleged operation to move ammunition components into Russia’s Kaliningrad region. Investigators say the network operated for more than two years, exposing the challenges of enforcing military export controls across Europe’s borders while Moscow seeks to sustain weapons production during its war against Ukraine. #DefenceMatters #Poland #NATO defencematters.eu/poland-rus…

NATO’s decision to select six counter-drone solutions from French manufacturer Alta Ares reflects the growing importance of relatively inexpensive interception systems. The procurement initiative draws directly on lessons from Ukraine, where mass-produced attack drones have challenged conventional air defence economics and forced militaries to reconsider how they protect troops and critical infrastructure. #DefenceMatters @AltaAresAI defencematters.eu/alta-ares-…

The Royal Navy has successfully launched one-way attack drones from HMS Queen Elizabeth for the first time, demonstrating how relatively inexpensive unmanned weapons could operate alongside F-35B fighter aircraft. The trials form part of Britain’s wider effort to transform its aircraft carriers into platforms combining conventional aviation with autonomous systems. #DefenceMatters @HMSQNLZ @RoyalNavy defencematters.eu/royal-navy…

EU Today has been subjected to a SLAPP following an exposé of Russia sanctions busting. We were in the right, but we could not afford the legal battle. We had no choice but to take the article down. #EUToday youtube.com/watch?v=NxdhU1qD…

In the light of what appears to be the end of Donald Trump’s political career, it is worth considering why a potential DeSantis presidency could present Europe with an opportunity to rebuild its relationship with Washington around military strength, shared strategic interests and a more balanced NATO alliance. #NATO #DefenceMatters @RonDeSantis defencematters.eu/could-ron-…

European manufacturer Destinus says it has produced more than 1,750 Ruta cruise missiles and is approaching an output of 300 a month. The figures suggest a change in Europe’s defence industrial capacity, but military planners face a separate challenge: turning higher production into sustainable operational capability. #DefenceMatters #NATO @DestinusDefence defencematters.eu/europe-cru…

NATO is developing a more offensive-minded approach to conventional defence, centred on the ability to destroy the military infrastructure sustaining an attack rather than relying primarily on stopping enemy forces at the front line. The shift reflects lessons from Russia’s war against Ukraine and growing concern that traditional defensive methods could prove inadequate against a large-scale assault on alliance territory. #DefenceMatters #NATO defencematters.eu/nato-deep-…

The Democrats’ victory in both chambers of the United States Congress has transformed Washington’s political balance and introduced a new element of uncertainty into relations between the White House and Europe. For European governments, the question is no longer simply what President Donald Trump intends to do, but how far a hostile Congress can influence his decisions during the remaining two years of his presidency. #EUToday #USAToday #DumpTrump eutoday.net/democrats-win-co…
