For @NewYorker, I wrote about Lebanon’s most intractable problem: disarming Hezbollah without tearing the country apart. It begins in a Beirut courtroom, with three fighters and a ten-dollar fine.

>3000 ppl have been killed in this war. I wrote about 1 strike on Black Wednesday for @NewYorker. The violence, pain, loss & also love, esp. of Arab men who are too often dehumanized. It’s a story that, these days, unfolds somewhere in #Lebanon every day

Breaking a longstanding diplomatic taboo, Lebanon’s government took a gamble by holding direct talks with Israel — a bet that appears, for now, to have paid off.
Turning a short-term truce into something lasting, however, will be a far greater challenge:

Israel is considering a short-term cease-fire in Lebanon that could pause the war against Iran-backed Hezbollah, three Israeli officials said on Wednesday.
The Israeli government has yet to formally sign off on the truce, and the discussions around it remained fluid. It could be discussed by Israel’s high-level security cabinet when it meets on Wednesday night, one of the officials said.

As Israel, again, kills journalists, here's what @pressfreedom said last year:
"Israel, in particular, has repeatedly killed journalists whom it subsequently - and in some cases preemptively - alleged were militants, without providing credible evidence to support its claims.
"To date, CPJ reporting has found that no one has been held accountable for any targeted killings of a journalist by Israel since October 7, 2023, or in the preceding 22 years."

Israel’s airstrikes in Lebanon have killed more than 1,000 people — at least 118 of them children. Many were civilians going about their lives: excited for birthdays, tending their plants and dreaming big in small towns.
Here are three of their stories:

Taline Shehab would have celebrated her 5th birthday last week.
She was killed by an Israeli strike along with her father, a well-known drone cameraman who worked in Lebanese television. Her mother, Natalie, remains in a coma, unaware her husband and only child are gone.
“She was our little princess,” said her uncle, Ali.
