In a week when Mount Etna is erupting & we mark the 146yr anniversary of Sir Charles Lyell's death (14 Nov 1797-22 Feb1875) - we welcome Senior Lyell Archivist, Elaine MacGillivray, as she reflects on Lyell's contribution to our understanding of the world wp.me/pcnwkP-4z
Charles Lyell’s 1828 study of thick layers of oyster fossils between layers of lava on Mt. Etna were key to his theories around geological time. Lyell's observations at #Etna were part of a revelatory shift in our understanding of time/our place in the universe. (Coll-203 Uncat.)
