After a perfect start to the season, Charlton are winless in nine and sliding down the Championship table - but, in my view, sacking Nathan Jones would only ever be a quick fix My first piece for @TheiPaperSport ✍🏼 #cafc inews.co.uk/sport/football/c…

Harry Kane was never the most talented, not touched by god like so many winners before him. But he is a worthy winner for what he made of himself. The one-season wonder. The boy who started scoring and simply never stopped. Now the king of the world. ⬇️ inews.co.uk/sport/football/h…

When Arsene Wenger retired, he was regarded as a relic who had not won a championship for 14 years and who should have won more than three of them. Perhaps. But none of his titles will have an asterisk beside them. ✍️ @timrich001 #AFC #MCFC inews.co.uk/sport/football/a…

Concerted, deliberate, calculated cheating is the conclusion. A Premier League heist. So throw the book at them and run the owners out of town. And Manchester City supporters should want to lead that movement. Column (free to read) inews.co.uk/sport/football/m…

So let's jump into the frankly mystifying Manager of the Month award for August...... #cafc the only side to have a 100 per cent record in August. #cafc won at West Ham United. The only loss the Hammers have suffered since relegation. Nathan Jones' side collected nine points from a possible nine. But the award goes to....Swansea's Vitor Matos. The Welsh side did not have a 100 per cent record - seven points from nine. I'm really not sure how Nathan Jones didn't win the accolade. Looking back at the winners in April, March, February and January....it was always the boss of the team with the most points collected (Tonda Eckert's Southampton had the joint most in April). Absolutely no slight intended on Swansea, who look a very tidy and impressive side. Just don't see how you don't give the accolade to the team which won every match - and produced a victory against the team widely tipped as promotion favourites before a ball was kicked. 📷 @KGtopsnapper

Exclusive: Prime Minister Andy Burnham is exploring a bid to host the men’s World Cup in the UK, alongside plans for a Northern Olympics, The i Paper can reveal. The move would bring the World Cup back to the UK for the first time since England hosted in 1966 and forms part of a growing push by Burnham to use major sporting events to drive investment, tourism and regeneration beyond London. Burnham told colleagues at a Friday morning meeting at No 10 North in Manchester that he is looking at how Britain could host the tournament and is already in talks with the nation’s footballing bodies about how a campaign could be delivered. A source familiar with the discussions said the bid was raised as part of talks on “stadium regeneration”. The next available World Cup is in 2038, followed by tournaments in 2042 and 2046. FIFA has yet to begin the formal process for awarding the 2038 tournament, and the Government has not said whether its ambitions are focused on the earliest available opportunity or a bid further into the future. The World Cup plan is being considered alongside the previously reported ambition to bring the Olympics to the north, with Burnham understood to be pursuing both projects as part of a wider push to attract major sporting events, investment and tourism to the regions.
