My OpEd in @nytimes from 2018 seems more relevant today than ever before- "No president should ever rule unchecked. No person should ever be given free rein to disregard the basic tenets of society, law and order, freedom and respect."

MCM's return to Venezuela complicates the Trump-Delcy alliance. MCM outside Venezuela was easy to sideline, but inside Venezuela Washington will have a hard time keeping her out of the conversation. Trump won't want his corrupt deals with Delcy for oil & gold disturbed.

Reports on Brazilian TV of terrible chaos. Polling stations that had already closed their doors, reopening. Poll clerks completely confused. What a nightmare. Hard to say what the consequences might be, tonight and in the weeks and months ahead.

Explosive story many years in the making, now out in Vanity Fair by Matthew Cole (who will be on Breaking Points next week, and publishing soon in @DropSiteNews):
Saudi Arabia and the UAE set up multi-billion slush funds for Jared Kushner to use.
Iran-Contra 2 here (except with Iran-Contra, at least the US got some hostages released. Not clear what we got out of this one.)

12/ But we found that the role of the Venezuelan gov. and the potential benefits to its people are largely absent from the deal.
NABEP never explicitly guarantees it will pay the ~$200B in royalties & tax payments to Venezuela that the White House has promised.

I have been trying to think of what Trump’s hideous “ballroom” project reminds me of — and I finally have it — it is Nicolai Ceausescu’s infamous and unfinished House of the People in communist Romania, which also brought awfulness to a lovely downtown. It features a huge ballroom with niches for portraits of the dictator and his wife and a sliding roof so that a helicopter can enter and exit. The building also had a nuclear bunker. The aesthetic sense of the two men is much the same but Trump’s construction will probably be even worse.
Another victory for lettuce.

Selective prosecution?
As a universal crime torture can be charged anywhere. But it rarely is in the U.S.
“Ex Maduro officials whom the Trump administration has now co-opted as its new allies are likely as complicit in torture as he is," says @KenRoth.

ICE shot someone in Manhattan today. Details are still coming in.
At around 4pm today, there was a shooting involving federal law enforcement agents in the Marble Hill neighborhood of the Bronx. The NYPD was not involved in the incident and was not on scene at the time of the shooting. The individual who was shot is at a nearby hospital and is currently conscious and receiving medical attention.
Guess she's got her immunity: "Delcy Rodríguez, as Maduro’s vice president, for years oversaw key elements of Venezuela’s security apparatus, including the domestic spy agency, responsible for arbitrary detentions and other human rights abuses." apnews.com/article/maduro-ve…

The new indictment appears to rely on the testimony of one of Maduro’s co-defendants, Gen. Hugo Carvajal, aka El Pollo.
Since pleading guilty last year to drug charges, the ex spymaster has been meeting with prosecutors building the case against Maduro.

US taxpayer dollars paying for this chest beating war machine propaganda.
Delcy's only "claim" to the Venezuelan presidency is through Maduro, as his VicePresident she took over in his absence (an absence never declared since it would trigger elections in 30 days). The "façade" of her interim presidency falls w/her failure to claim his immunity.
Venezuela's "silence is devastating" to Maduro's claims that he is immune from U.S. criminal charges, prosecutors argue in new filing.
Unlike in other cases, where @delcyrodriguezv has asserted sovereign immunity for herself, lawyers for 🇻🇪have made no such claim for Maduro.
