I visited Wurster Hall at UC Berkeley today. It was designed by, and currently houses, the architecture faculty. The UC Berkeley website notes that "Wurster is often voted Berkeley's ugliest building." I visited because I was curious about whether it would in person seem as unattractive as it does in photos. And, in short: it does. It's gaunt, austere, and filmed in grime. On an elysian campus, it stands out for its bleak hostility. It reminds me of the German submarine base in Bordeaux. The UC Berkeley page agrees that it was never designed to be attractive, quoting the curator of their design archives: “Wurster and his handpicked architects didn’t want anything romantic, or sentimental — they hated the idea of ‘making pretty buildings. They wanted a serious building.” I guess we have to concede success relative to their stated goals, but it does make one wonder what it all says about architecture as a discipline.

I'd describe Opus 5.5 as relentless, but that implies some degree of struggle, rather than the casual vanquishing of every problem put before it.

DJI is mass rolling out 1280 x 1024 thermal imaging for its Mavic-sized drones while American 640 x 480 imagers are on 6+ mo lead times This should be a MASSIVE wake up call to the Western industrial base, fire alarms should be ringing.

Narrator: There was in fact, a wolf.
A growing number of people are wondering if Anthropic is the AI industry’s “boy who cried wolf.” If Mythos-related threats don’t materialize, the company will have a serious credibility problem.

I think Thariq’s willingness to engage with the Claude Code user base has been admirable, they’re worse off without him on the team tbh
I’ve left Anthropic after more than a year of working on Claude Code and seeing it scale larger than I ever imagined. I have really loved working at Ant and believe deeply in the mission, and most of all, the idea of a race to the top. The idea that if we work hard and responsibly, we can raise the bar and inspire others to great outcomes. And if we all push each other to be better, things can be radically good. I will carry the spirit of this with me forever. My colleagues at Anthropic are the most talented, thoughtful, competent, and earnest people I have ever met. I am glad they are at the wheel and trust them deeply. To the community on X, thank you for everything. You’ve made this the most fun (and sometimes stressful) job I’ve ever had. For me, it is time for a bit of a break before diving into something new. If you want more excellent Claude Code content, you should follow @addyosmani , @lydiahallie, @_catwu, @ClaudeDevs and of course @bcherny who started it all.

This is literally true. Even like a year or two ago, a lot of progressive people were just calling Starlink sky pollution with no redeeming value.
5 years ago: Starlink is such a stupid idea. Anyone wasting money investing in this Musk scam deserves to lose everything. Today: Starlink is essential to the defense of an invaded nation. Access to Starlink is a human right! Nationalize it!

It's a huge misunderstanding of betting markets to think they'll be "humiliated" if an event to which they assign 35% probability happens. If you roll a 1 or 2 on a dice, the dice is not humiliated because "Numbers that small only come up a third of the time".
I have several mutuals who have bet literally thousands of dollars (possibly tens of thousands at this point) on Paxton winning. The idea that someone like Talarico, who believes White skin is a virus and that we should govern the country like a big kindergarten class, could win a Senate race in Texas just seems totally unbelievable. And yet, the betting markets give him an overwhelming advantage and he has led or tied in every single poll since the end of the summer, bar one. Someone is wrong here. Either the market participants and pollsters are about to be humiliated, or our political landscape is going to be shattered in a way that few people are prepared for.

I think the pardon power needs to be severely limited or eliminated. Arguably was abused by previous administrations as well, so maybe this can be made bipartisan.
SCOOP: White House lawyers weigh preemptive pardons for large numbers of junior admin staff, as MAGA allies press for protections for lower ranking aides Under discussion is pardons everyone in certain policy, like deportation Does not seem imminent washingtonsun.com/whitehouse…

ppl in 2016: if your arguments are so rational why arent you winning ppl in 2026: beware their arguments because rationalists are SECRETLY the most POWERFUL group in the multi bajillion dollar AI industry ppl* never: object level takes on the arguments * except a few cool ppl
people used to say "rationality is about winning but rats aren't notably much more successful, so rationality must not all that". now many rats are v rich so the dunk goes the other way but ideally you'd agree on rationality's value in this world & a world where AI was 50y later

I think foie gras is pretty barbaric, as are the ways we produce a lot of meat products in general. I support any and all bans on specific meat products that most people would agree are produced in horrific ways, and that they wouldn't endorse if they just read about the conditions the animals are in, so I support the proposed foie gras ban in DC. If this were a law about force feeding dogs in the same way I don't think we'd be having as many conversations about the second order effects.

Never seen a more flagrant and violent breach of privacy in my life, and probably never will. Doubtful that a privacy violation will ever even be able to compare to the scale of this evil and deliberate attack. Samsung should be eviscerated for this. Criminal charges please
turns out it classifies what audio it hears, before reporting back to samsung. sensor preferences, dog-barking and baby-crying event counters, and camera streaming duration are built into telemetry paths.

It's the same pretty much everywhere with rent controls. A story from Berlin:
True in Spain too. Every landlord in Madrid and Barcelona screens the renters now. This is an obvious consequence of rent control. The most vulnerable, ostensible protected by the legislation, are in fact excluded from the rental market: if you cannot be evicted for non payment, then you are too risky a renter.
