In Guy Ritchie's British crime comedy classic Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998), Jason Statham's feature film debut as Bacon, a smooth-talking street hustler selling knockoff goods, remains one of the most famous non-traditional origin stories in modern movie history.
Before landing the role, Statham had no professional acting training. He was a former British international diver and fashion model who supplemented his income as a real-life street vendor, selling fake jewelry and counterfeit perfume on London street corners.
While modeling for the clothing brand French Connection, Statham was introduced to up-and-coming director Guy Ritchie, who was looking to cast authentic, street-wise personalities rather than traditional theater actors.
Ritchie challenged Statham to an impromptu audition: convince him to buy fake jewelry as if he were a street vendor.
Statham leaned into his real-life hustling experience so convincingly that he actually sold Ritchie several sets of fake jewelry. When the audition ended and Ritchie tried to return the items and get his money back, Statham refused, walking away with the cash and proving he was the streetwise hustler Ritchie needed for the film.
Andy Serkis’s legendary on-set performance as Sméagol stands as the single most revolutionary milestone in visual effects and digital acting history.
Serkis single-handedly transformed what studios viewed as a technical stunt into a genuine, emotional complex and Oscar worthy performance art.
Andy Serkis revealed that he developed the Gollum’s raspy, choking voice by watching his cat Cleo cough up hairballs.
He acted every single scene on set with Elijah Wood and Sean Astin.
Pure dedication!
