THE HUMP.
A Medal of Honor for actions today in a "forgotten" war that cost a third of the pilots who flew "The Hump." Major Horace S. Carswell Jr. was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for remaining at the controls of his crippled B-24 and saving his crew over China. He served with the 308th Bomb Group, which had to transport its own fuel over "The Hump" - the deadly Himalayan air route that claimed over 600 aircraft and 1,650 airmen. One third of pilots never came home.
