From Tarporley to Ontario, whether in-person or online, the University of Guelph equine events are a joy to contribute to. Critically reflective horse people are the future of equestrian practice.
PhD thesis prison is very pleasurable today, enjoying a Tilly's build-your-own salad special😋

Huge thanks to @UCLan for inviting me to speak with vet med students today, sharing my career journey into clinical animal behaviour. Loved seeing your incredible new vet school: immersive teaching rooms, rehab & sim suites, virtual operations: inspiring!

My Manchester. Off to the Doctoral conference at Manchester Metropolitan University to present my almost final musings(!) around my PhD research. Already blown away by Prof. Katy Mason integrating equestrianism, organisation and business markets in her keynote.
Want to know what my book Equine Behaviour in Practice is about and why I wrote it? There's an "in conversation" piece with me in the CRC Press Spring/Summer guide that you can read here. Pleased to see it chosen by CRC to be presented at London Book Fair last week too.

Many ways to relieve an itch!
A Galician pony mare falls behind from the rest of the band and stops beside an upright rock slab. She starts to rub her neck against it gently at first, then with increasingly varied vigor. After about 3 minutes she moves on hurriedly to join the remainder of the band grazing further downhill.

What a great shot!
A horse delicately munches on a cotton thistle (Onopordum acanthium) flower.
In Spain, these thistles are called 'cardo borriquero', which curiously translates to donkey (burro) thistle.

What a backward step for horse welfare. So much for the Animal Welfare Act even when enforcement is attempted.

How to truly get inside the lived experience of both the horse and their rider as they negotiate their individual and combined meaning-making when participating in equestrian activities?

If you are interested in the background to the conversations about the FEI, sports horse welfare and the possibility of an ethical future for equestrian competition (no spoilers from me on that one), this is a fantastic listen, from Cristina Wilkins.

Thinking of working as CAB or ABT?
We believe that both trainers and behaviourists should be qualified, assessed and regulated.
That is why the APBC is a member of the regulating body, the @ABTCouncil.
