🔥 "When my dad has been called to go and help, my heart drops. Worries get so big that I'm crying non-stop." Those are the words of a 12-year-old girl whose father is a moorland gamekeeper. When a wildfire breaks out, he goes — often through the night. She lies awake. She was one of dozens from moorland communities who gave written evidence to Parliament's wildfire inquiry this year. Most came from the keepers and farmers who fight these fires. A handful came from the people who wait at home. They are clear about one thing: the strain they describe is the result of decisions taken in Whitehall about who is trusted to manage these moors — and what happens when the fuel is left to build. Every week I get the same comment. "Why is your farm shop meat so much more expensive than the supermarket?" It's a fair question. But it's the wrong question. The real question is — how is the supermarket so cheap? And when you understand the four mechanisms they use to get to that price, you'll realise you've already been paying the full cost. It just doesn't show up on your receipt.

🦅 To deal with a goshawk taking poults from a release pen, Natural England's advice to the gamekeeper was: shoot at it. Not lethally. "Shoot to scare" - listed as a non-lethal deterrent he'd need to try before NE would even consider a lethal control licence. The goshawk is Schedule 1. Fully protected. The keeper had already said he wouldn't, because of the risks. NE's answer: show us you tried anyway. So the rule is now - prove you've fired a gun at a protected raptor, then we'll talk about a licence. Two questions NE can't dodge. How does "fire a gun near a Schedule 1 bird" get past police firearms licensing? And if scaring a goshawk with a shotgun is fine to protect pheasants for profit, why isn't the same tool offered to protect curlew and lapwing for conservation? This is regulatory theatre. Brown rice is what you order when you want the waiter to know you have made peace with joylessness in exchange for health points. The arsenic is the twist nobody puts on the menu. Rice has a problem unique among grains. It grows in flooded paddies, sitting in standing water for months, and it draws arsenic out of the soil roughly ten times more eagerly than wheat or barley. That arsenic concentrates in the bran, the grain's outer layer. White rice has the bran polished off. Brown rice keeps it, because the bran is where the fibre and minerals live. It is also, inconveniently, where the arsenic lives. A 2025 analysis found brown rice carries around 24% more total arsenic and 40% more inorganic arsenic, the form classed as a known human carcinogen, than white. You upgraded to the wholegrain and quietly upgraded your carcinogen dose along with it. Then the ecology, which nobody ever pins on rice, because rice looks so very innocent. Those flooded paddies are anaerobic, and the microbes thriving in them belch methane on an industrial scale. Rice cultivation produces something like 10% of all human methane emissions and roughly a fifth of agricultural methane. Cattle get filmed for documentaries about their burps. Rice quietly produces a tenth of the world's methane while flooding entire landscapes and hoarding arsenic, then takes its place in the salad bar wearing a wellness halo. Cows are dragged through the climate courts every week. The rice paddy, doing serious damage of its own, sits in your grain bowl with the expression of something that has never done anything wrong in its life. Curious, isn't it, which foods we decide to interrogate.

It all depends upon ‘who’ is doing the talking… or whom if you like 😉
Freya is a European bison at a rewilding project on the Rhug Estate in Denbighshire. She weighs roughly 600 kilograms. She is approximately five years old and she is, technically, the largest land mammal in Britain. This is a fact that the conservation press would like you to find moving. Freya is performing a job that the conservation press has only recently discovered. Specifically, she is grazing. Heavily, intermittently, and on her own schedule, in a pattern that the staff describe as "ecosystem engineering" because that sounds like a planned outcome rather than a side effect. The grazing pattern she performs is the grazing pattern that European bison have performed for the entire history of European bison. It is also, almost exactly, the grazing pattern that British cattle have performed in lowland Britain for the entire history of British cattle. The difference is that Freya is being studied by ecologists who write papers, while the Hereford in the field next door is being studied by an economist who writes off the farmer's subsidy. When Freya grazes a hawthorn, it is described as "restoration." When the Hereford grazes a hawthorn, it is described as "agricultural pressure." When Freya creates a wallow in the mud, it is described as "habitat creation for invertebrates." When the Hereford does the same, it is described as "poaching the ground." When Freya defecates in a meadow, it is described as "nutrient cycling that supports a complex web of dung beetles and birds." When the Hereford does the same, it is described as "manure." Freya is a bison. The Hereford is a cow. They are the same animal doing the same job on the same landscape. One of them is on a conservation magazine cover. The other is on a methane spreadsheet, and the only difference between the two animals, as far as a botanist counting wildflowers in either field would be able to tell you, is the press release.

I can never understand people walking the moors in shorts - tick magnets with their heads in the metaphorical sand, trousers and gaiters for me always, and still the occasional blighter hitches a ride 😬
🕷️ 20 years ago, the UK recorded around 250 Lyme disease cases a year. Today, public health guidance estimates 3,000–4,000 new cases annually. GP-record studies put the figure closer to 10,000. Some estimates go as high as 45,000. Gamekeepers, farmers and moorland managers are reporting a massive, visible increase in tick numbers across northern Britain. In some spots, visitors and their dogs are stepping out of cars and finding themselves covered. Lyme is often misdiagnosed as ME, lupus, arthritis or even COVID. Untreated, it can cause neurological problems and chronic fatigue lasting decades. Red grouse exposed to tick-borne louping-ill virus can suffer mortality rates of up to 80%, and the protective vaccine is currently unavailable. Active land management - targeted grazing, bracken control, vegetation cutting and managed burning - keeps tick habitat in check. Personal vigilance does the rest. Read more - link in replies 👇

We want to be in the European Union. And I am confident that if some representatives of the EU do not make mistakes, we will be there. We are already strengthening the EU, first and foremost from a security perspective. And today, security is a priority for everyone. A union that could be much stronger – I believe this would be a union of such countries as Norway, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and Türkiye. These are four countries that the European Union is lacking. Because Türkiye and Ukraine together outmatch Russia’s army: from control of the Black Sea to control of airspace. I know there are questions when it comes to Türkiye. I know that the United Kingdom has left the European Union. I know that Norway has many different forms of cooperation and economic ties with the EU, and so on. But I still believe that these four countries would make the EU the strongest union in the world, with the best security in the world. We are not seeking an alternative. I simply believe that these four countries are very strong and would make the European Union stronger. And even these four countries on their own would certainly form a very strong union. From an interview with the "United News" telethon (3/5).

I can no longer hold my tongue seeing the utter lies being spread about Britain, our history of migration, and how this country was built into what it is today. For those so deeply buried in fake news, manufactured outrage and billionaire‑funded propaganda, I’m going to lay out the truth – and exactly why you’re being fed all this poison. Britain was never a sealed white island. From Roman times there were African soldiers stationed on Hadrian’s Wall and living in British towns, people from across the empire walking these roads nearly 2,000 years ago. Through the Middle Ages and Tudor England you still find Black people in the records – sailors, craftsmen, servants, musicians – even Black musicians at the royal court and Africans being baptised, marrying and being buried in English parishes like anyone else. This isn’t some modern experiment; it’s older than half the castles people visit on their bank‑holiday tours. As Britain went out into the world, the world came here. Sailors and traders from India, Yemen and beyond were arriving in British ports from the 1600s. Some of those men were practising a new faith to most Britons at the time, praying quietly in boarding houses near the docks while they worked brutal shifts in the engine rooms of British ships. Over the centuries, more people from North Africa, the Middle East and South Asia passed through and settled, bringing their languages, foods and beliefs into port cities that were far more mixed than today’s nostalgia merchants like to admit. After two world wars, the truth is simple: this country asked the Commonwealth to come and rebuild it. People from the Caribbean, Africa and South Asia didn’t sneak in; they were recruited. They came to drive buses and trains, staff the NHS, work in mills and foundries, clean offices, run corner shops, open takeaways and small businesses, and yes, build prayer spaces and community centres alongside churches and temples in the neighbourhoods everyone now pretends were always “traditional” and “unchanged”. They did the work that kept Britain going while being told to go home, refused housing, and treated as permanent outsiders. And what have they been paid back with? Scandals where people who’ve lived, worked and paid taxes here for decades get told they don’t belong. Policies designed to make life so hostile that some give up and leave. A media that uses their names, accents, clothes or places of worship as props in endless scare stories. The message is always the same: you might toil for this country, but you will never fully be of it. So when you hear that “Britain was white until recently” or that the country has been “overrun”, understand that you don’t arrive at that belief by accident. You get there because your history has been deliberately ripped out and replaced with a comforting myth: that “real” Britain is white, homogenous, and constantly under siege from people who look, speak or pray differently. Now look at when this myth has been turned up to max volume. Wages frozen. Housing a sick joke. Energy and food prices out of control. Public services hacked to pieces. At the same time, the number of people hoarding unimaginable wealth at the top has exploded. Funny, isn’t it, how every front page is about boats and “swarms” and “our culture”, and almost never about the landlords, hedge funds, private equity and offshore trusts quietly buying up your city and your future. That’s because this isn’t just prejudice; it’s a strategy. If you’re sitting on a mountain of wealth, the last thing you want is ordinary people – of every colour and background – realising they have the same problems and the same enemy. Much safer if the factory worker is furious at the new family down the road. Much safer if the person who can’t see a doctor blames the nurse with an accent instead of the minister who cut the funding. Much safer if a man who can’t afford his rent spends his rage on the woman in a headscarf at the bus stop instead of the billionaire who owns half his city. Racist rhetoric, religious dog‑whistling, all of it, exists to break solidarity. It turns neighbours into enemies and stops people seeing that Black, brown and white working‑class communities have far more in common with each other than any of them will ever have with the people flying in on private jets. It keeps you so busy policing skin colour, passports and prayer mats that you never get round to asking why your kids can’t afford a home, why your parents can’t get a hospital bed, why you’re working harder and standing still. The real story of Britain is this: a crossroads, not a fortress. Africans on Hadrian’s Wall. Black people in Tudor courts and city streets. Sailors, traders and workers from South Asia, the Middle East and beyond in the ports. Caribbean, African and Asian workers rebuilding the country after the war, staffing surgeries and hospitals, driving cabs, running shops, cooking food, teaching kids. Today’s multi‑ethnic, multi‑faith working class is not a glitch; it is Britain. It built this place and it keeps it running. If you’re genuinely angry about what’s happening to this country, good. You should be. But aim it where it belongs. Britain was never pure, never untouched, never “theirs” to take back. The people ruining your standard of living are not the ones risking their lives to get here, or the ones whose names you struggle to pronounce. They’re the ones buying politicians, owning media outlets, writing the story of this country so you never learn your own – and never realise who is standing beside you.

We remain resolute. This morning in the Mediterranean, the French Navy intercepted and boarded another vessel from the shadow fleet, the Deyna. The war involving Iran will not deflect France from its support for Ukraine, where Russia’s war of aggression continues unabated. These vessels, which evade international sanctions and violate the law of the sea, are profiteers of war. They line their pockets while helping finance Russia’s war effort. We will not allow it.

Given Trump's illegal war that is devastating the Middle East and pushing up energy bills, Keir Starmer should advise the King to call off April’s state visit to the US. A state visit should not be given to someone who repeatedly insults and damages our country.
