Clive Davis, the music executive who helped to shape the careers of Bruce Springsteen, Whitney Houston, Janis Joplin, Barry Manilow, Carlos Santana and many other hitmakers, has died at 94.
"To the world, our father was the iconic music legend whose vision, instincts, and relentless pursuit of excellence shaped the soundtrack of countless lives," his family wrote in a statement. "He discovered, mentored, and championed the greatest artists in modern music history, leaving an indelible mark on culture that will endure for generations."
Davis' more than five-decade career spanned various genres and multiple labels.
He first joined Columbia Records as a lawyer in 1960 and became president of the label just seven years later. While there, he signed artists like Springsteen, Billy Joel, Pink Floyd and Aerosmith. But in 1973, he was fired for allegedly misusing funds.
Davis later formed Arista Records, which became a success with Houston, Patti Smith and Aretha Franklin, among other artists.
The label's then-parent company, BMG Entertainment, wanted Davis to retire and pushed him out in 2000. After, he started J Records.
Davis, a multi-time Grammy winner, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000.
