“The important distinction is understanding the difference between acquiring knowledge and acquiring experience.”
In the fire service, credibility takes more than a social media following. David Stone explains why in “Knowing Your Lane.” - ow.ly/AJz450ZYNej
An Exciting New Chapter for FDIC International and the Fire & Rescue Group
We are excited to share that Clarion Events has announced an agreement to be acquired by Informa, a global leader in events and information services.
While this marks an important new chapter for our organization, what remains unchanged is our commitment to the fire service community. We will continue to focus on delivering world-class events, industry-leading education, meaningful networking opportunities, and valuable business connections for our attendees, exhibitors, partners, and customers.
We are proud of what we've built together and excited about the opportunities ahead. Thank you for your continued trust and support as we move into this next phase of growth.

You can’t outwork trauma.
You can’t sleep it off forever. You can’t just “toughen up” and expect the hard calls, the deaths, the sleepless nights, and everything you carry home to have no effect.
And the fire service is finally learning that talking about mental health doesn’t make you weak.
This World Suicide Prevention Day, Firefighter Nation is continuing our focus on firefighter mental health through the lens of science.
We’re looking at what the research actually tells us about suicide, trauma, PTSD, sleep, substance use, resilience, treatment, and recovery in the fire service.
Not clichés. Not “suck it up.” Not feel-good advice.
Real research. Real conversations. Real options for firefighters who are struggling.
Because taking care of the people who run toward the worst days of someone else’s life has to include taking care of what those calls can do to them.
Know the signs. Know the science. Know that getting help is not the end of your career or a failure to handle the job.
Sometimes, getting help is how you stay in it.
Close your eyes.
Can you picture your worst call?
Now imagine having no mental image at all.
One firefighter recently discovered, nearly 60 years into his life, that he has aphantasia. He believes it may have helped protect him from some of the intrusive visual memories associated with traumatic calls.

☕ Does coffee dehydrate you?
Not in normal amounts.
Caffeine is a mild diuretic, but the fluid in your coffee still counts toward hydration.
That doesn’t mean coffee should replace water and electrolytes on a hot fireground.
Keep the coffee. Hydrate properly. Know your caffeine intake: ow.ly/vKHo50ZJ3rx
Firefighters are exposed to trauma as a condition of employment.
So what happens when conventional treatment doesn't work?
Psychedelic therapies are being studied for PTSD and depression, and veterans and first responders are already exploring them.
You don't have to support psychedelics to believe the fire service needs to have an informed conversation about them.

Volunteer firefighters have to fuel for more than the firehouse.
Your day job, training, family, call volume and workload all affect what your body needs.
Keep it simple: protein, carbs around hard work, fluids throughout the day and a few reliable snacks in your truck or go bag.

The job doesn’t always stay at the station.
Firefighters bring home more than dirty gear and exhaustion. Stress, disrupted sleep and emotional withdrawal can affect the entire family.
New research examining firefighter and spouse pairs points to an important reality:
Firefighter mental health training cannot stop with the firefighter.

The job changes you.
The calls. The losses. The mistakes. The lessons.
You can let those experiences harden you, or you can use them to build perspective, resilience and purpose.
Resilience isn't always bouncing back.
Sometimes it's bouncing forward.

GLP 1 medications may help with weight loss, but firefighters need to think beyond the scale.
Reduced appetite, dehydration and muscle loss can affect fueling, recovery and performance.
Megan Lautz and registered dietitian Michelle Bugbee discuss what firefighters should consider before and during GLP 1 use on Fueling Fire:

What happens when the brotherhood breaks?
“It’s one thing to face trauma on a call; it’s another thing to face it alone afterward.”
Resilience can’t depend on one connection.
Build three:
🔥 Others
🧠 Yourself
🙏 Your faith or purpose
Being strong doesn’t mean carrying everything alone.
