SHOCKER: the man who allegedly took a sledgehammer to the Iwo Jima monument outside Marine Corps Base in Quantico and BEHE*DED one of the Marines depicted in the iconic World War II flag-raising is an ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT. Prince William County police responded around 10:13 p.m. on October 21 to the statue near Richmond Highway and Fuller Road in Quantico, Virginia, where officers say they found 27-year-old Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano of Stafford actively striking the monument. One Marine figure was left completely headless, another sustained damage to his helmet and face, and a third had damage to the bayonet on his rifle. Authorities estimate the destruction will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to repair. Federal sources told multiple outlets that Maldonado Soriano entered the United States illegally in December 1999. He later received DACA protection in 2014, had that protection extended in 2024, and lost it in August 2026 when it was not renewed. Police charged him with felony destruction of property, felony injury to a monument, and trespassing with intent to damage property. He is being held without bond. The White House called him a “criminal illegal alien” and condemned the alleged destruction of a monument honoring American service members. The 9-foot limestone statue was sculpted by Felix de Weldon as a replica of the famous World War II flag-raising on Iwo Jima and stands near the entrance to Marine Corps Base Quantico.
