Breaking the link between gas and what UK consumers pay for energy has long been @LibDems policy.
Holding government to account with sound policy that is then adopted matters. We'd have gone further to halve UK energy bills from kickoff.

This right here would be a massive story if we weren’t flooded every single day with 10 more things we never considered possible.
A nuclear power plant, in Ukraine, as a spoil of war, for the US, in order *to mine cryptocurrency*, delivered by Putin.
The United States is discussing the possibility of jointly managing the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant without Ukraine’s involvement, Putin said.
He claimed that the US is interested in using the plant for cryptocurrency mining. At the same time, Putin said that electricity supplies to Ukraine are also being considered at Washington’s initiative.
Putin added that Ukrainian specialists continue to work at the plant but now hold Russian passports.

Putin responded to calls for ceasefire by launching a terrorist attack on Kyiv just before the New Year.
Right now, Russian drones are deliberately targeting residential buildings in the capital of Ukraine. There are numerous fires and destruction, and civilians are buried under rubble.

As for the strikes. When the Germans and the Americans proposed a Christmas ceasefire, there was nothing new in the fact that the Russians immediately jumped in and said: no, we do not want anything like that. The problem is that when Russia says there will be no Christmas ceasefire, that is, in principle, always what they say – they deliberately underscore such statements. After these signals from them, I instructed our intelligence services to significantly step up their work and get a clear picture of where we stand.
We understand that precisely on these days they may – this is in their nature – carry out massive strikes on Christmas. And today we had a Staff meeting on this, and the number one issue was air defense: the protection of our cities, villages, and communities, especially on the 23rd, 24th, and 25th. This needs to be paid attention to. The military must pay attention directly, ensure protection as much as they can. Everything is very difficult, because there is, unfortunately, a shortage of air defense systems. And people also need to pay attention – serious attention – during these days, because these “comrades” may launch such strikes – there is nothing sacred for them.
As for our air defense systems. Ukraine is working on this. Here, everything depends on the technical capabilities of our specialists and how quickly they will be able to do this. But air defense systems cannot be created instantly. We are close to the relevant results. We want the war to end, and we will continue to strengthen ourselves. We are working on a strong contract with the Americans for dozens – several dozen – Patriot systems, to be procured through various programs. All of this work is ongoing, and I am confident there will be results.

Ukrainian soldiers say the most effective defense against fiber-optic FPV drones remains the combo of a “Safari” shotgun and the “Ptashka” net launcher. If the drone survives buckshot, it’s caught by a 4x4m net fired up to 30m.

This could have been the UK's equivalent to the Bondi Beach terrorist attack if it hadn't been foiled by a supremely brave undercover police officer.
The men had guns and ammunition, and travelled to Prestwich and Higher Broughton in north Manchester where one carried out surveillance on Jewish nurseries, schools, synagogues and shops - including my nephew's school.
"Days later he told Farouk: "Here in Manchester, we have the biggest Jewish community. God willing we will degrade and humiliate them (in the worst way possible), and hit them where it hurts.""

Premier of Greenland 🇬🇱 statement this morning;
This morning, I am both saddened and grateful 🇬🇱
Saddened, because during a press conference last night, the President of the United States once again expressed a desire to take over Greenland. With such statements, our country is reduced to a question of security and power. That is not how we see ourselves, and it is not how Greenland can or should be spoken about.
We are a people with a long history, a strong culture, and a vibrant democracy. We are a country with responsibility for our own territory and for our own future. Our territorial integrity and our right to self-determination are firmly anchored in international law and cannot simply be ignored.
That is also why I am grateful.
Thank you to everyone here at home for the clear support and unity that has been shown. The calmness and dignity with which you have met this situation send a strong signal of a people who stand firm in their values and in their responsibility.
I would also like to thank heads of government and partners around the world who have clearly and unequivocally expressed their respect for Greenland, for our democratic institutions, and for the fundamental principles of international law. That support confirms that we here at home do not stand alone.
Once again: Greenland is our country. Decisions are made here. And I will at all times fight for our freedom and our right to decide for ourselves and to shape our own future.
For now, I hope that the peace of Christmas can settle over us all.
Merry Christmas 🇬🇱💙🇬🇱

You may agree or disagree with Bohdan, but his views reflect an experience earned by blood.
I have reviewed the article “The Bear in the Baltics: Reassessing the Russian Threat in Estonia,” published by the European Council on Foreign Relations. Its authors, Jennifer Kavanagh and Jeremy Shapiro, conclude that Russia is currently incapable of carrying out a successful armed attack against Estonia and that the level of threat is exaggerated.
This is precisely where the core problem of this analysis begins.
The entire argument is built on theoretical models, force-balance calculations, and deterrence concepts, while completely ignoring the decisive factor of modern warfare: accumulated combat experience under real battlefield conditions.
Today, only two states in the world possess actual experience in conducting high-intensity interstate war — Ukraine and Russia. All others, including Estonia and the vast majority of NATO members, rely on exercises, staff simulations, and doctrinal assumptions that have not been tested in full-scale combat.
Estonia, despite its high level of preparation, lacks practical experience in:
•conducting operations under conditions of sustained enemy artillery dominance and high fire density;
•operating forces in an environment of persistent surveillance and strike capability enabled by tactical and operational-level UAVs;
•maintaining logistics and command-and-control resilience under systematic fire strikes against rear infrastructure;
•executing defensive operations and maneuver while continuously absorbing losses, degradation of units, and uninterrupted fire pressure;
•adapting tactics, force organization, and command systems in real time, rather than after a completed training cycle.
This is not a criticism of the Estonian Defence Forces. It is a statement of fact: combat experience cannot be substituted by doctrines, exercises, or alliance membership.
A separate and particularly dangerous error in the article is the emphasis on Russia’s “exhaustion” through personnel losses.
Russia is structurally insensitive to human losses as a constraint on warfare. Its military-political system is historically designed to:
•sustain mass mobilization;
•accept extremely high casualties as permissible;
•substitute quality with quantity through forced rotation and replacement.
Those who treat manpower losses as a decisive deterrent factor for Russia project Western assumptions onto an adversary to whom they do not apply — and this is precisely how wars are lost.
The greatest damage done by this article is that it fosters a false sense of strategic confidence. It reassures decision-makers that Russia is “not ready,” “not capable,” or “will not dare.” This same logic underpinned strategic failures in both 2014 and 2022.
The most dangerous assumption made by the authors is that war is the outcome of a rational cost-benefit calculation. In reality, Russia wages war according to a logic of political inevitability, imperial revisionism, and a willingness to accept virtually any cost.
Russia will attack — this is not a question of capability, but of timing and conditions.
And the longer European decision-making centers rely on such reassuring, detached analyses, the more severe the shock will be when reality disproves them.

Today, we again heard signals from Moscow that they are preparing to make next year a year of war. These signals are not only for us. It is crucial that our partners see them, and not only see them but also respond – especially partners in the United States, who often say that Russia wants to end the war.
Yet the signals coming from Russia are the exact opposite, taking the form of official orders to their army. This Russian mindset must be recognized – and acted upon. When Russia is in this mindset, it will also undermine diplomacy – seeking, through diplomatic language and pressure over specific points in documents – to merely mask its desire to destroy Ukraine and Ukrainians, and the desire to legitimize Russia’s theft of our land. And then come other countries in Europe, which someone in Russia might one day label their so‑called “historical lands.”
Real protection is needed against this Russian case history of madness, and we will continue working with all partners to ensure that protection is in place. Security measures are needed, financial measures are needed – including actions on Russian assets – political measures are needed. And the courage of all partners is required: to see the truth, acknowledge the truth, and act accordingly. I want to thank everyone who supports Ukraine.

Official Statement by The Global Imams Council Regarding the Terrorist Attack on the Jewish Community at Bondi Beach, Sydney, During Hanukkah Celebrations.
Statement delivered by: H.E. Imam Tawhidi (@imamofpeace).

The news from Bondi beach is grim.
For many it will have terrible echoes of the massacres on October 7th.
For Jews living here it will feel painfully close to the murders at a synagogue in Manchester.
It is a reminder - if one was needed - that Jews all over the world now live in fear.
If you struggle to understand that fear - you may not have any Jewish family or friends as it is a very small community - I urge you to think of the impact on the Muslim and, indeed, the wider community of the Christchurch mosque attack in New Zealand.
Tonight Jews everywhere will light candles to mark the start of the festival of lights - Hanukkah. Few will feel able to
celebrate. Many will be worrying about what might happen next.
