"Customers will upload a part and everything downstream will be manufactured autonomously within the next 12 months." Our founder & CEO Erik Palitsch in the @latimes. We're building the factory that lets hardware companies scale from one part to thousands. Everyone wants to be physical AI. Very few are generating the physical data that justifies the term. Without it, you’re riding the bandwagon. The future belongs to software and hardware built together from day one. @ErikPalitsch @EdwardMehr Full episode in the comments.
America doesn't need to rebuild the factories of the 1950s. It needs to invent the factories of the future. @EdwardMehr and @freeform_future CEO @ErikPalitsch discuss reindustrialization, lessons from SpaceX, outmaneuvering China, and the future of physical AI. Full discussion 👇

If your “physical AI” is only trained on simulation, it’s not physical AI. Sim doesn’t have porosity. Sim doesn’t have thermal drift. Sim doesn’t have a bad batch of material. Real data comes from your own machines making real parts. Everyone else is grabbing the words, shipping hollow marketing, and diluting the term for the companies actually doing the work. #advancedmanufacturing #physicalAI

For years, additive couldn’t make it past prototyping. The process wasn’t repeatable, the parts were hard to certify, and the economics never worked at volume. The new generation of 3D printing fixes those problems at the root, with smarter process control, more efficient throughput, and consistent production-grade parts. That’s why this is the moment. The technology finally matches the demand, and the government needs manufacturing capacity it can’t get from legacy supply chains. forbes.com/sites/zitaballing…?

38 lasers. Real-time scheduling. A three-day print that can’t survive a single crash. Sam Secondo writes the software that decides which lasers fire, and where, on @freeform_future's printers. On the edge, the only layer between you and molten metal is your own software. #EdgeComputing #AdvancedManufacturing #softwareengineering

Great week at Stanford’s Defense Industrialization panel. Main takeaway is America won’t win the race the old way. We must: - Innovate, don’t integrate. New factories should be automated by design. - New technology requires new approaches to qualification. - Build what comes next, not what already exists. #AmericanManufacturing #DefenseTech

Nandana is the Mechanical Technical Director at @bruinracing and a rising senior in mechanical engineering at @UCLAengineering. This summer at @freeform_future, she owned the commissioning of our new depowdering system. Parts come out of our printers buried in metal powder, and all of it has to come off before they move through post processing. The current system on our smaller printer can’t handle the volume that Skyfall produces, so Nandana commissioned the new one. Manufacturing engineering is where theory meets the floor, problems get solved in real time, and those solutions end up as parts in the hands of our customers. #MechanicalEngineering #AdditiveManufacturing #EngineeringInternship

The hardest problem in American defense manufacturing isn't scale. It's that we keep mistaking assembly for invention. We're excited for our founder & CEO @ErikPalitsch to take the stage at the Defense Industrial Summit at Stanford this week. Rebuilding the defense industrial base won't come from retrofitting a supply chain built for another era. Innovation is the only path to progress. That's the reason we exist. #DefenseTech #AdvancedManufacturing #DefenseIndustrialBase #Reindustrialization

A bad PCB doesn't announce itself. It fails somewhere downstream, takes a system with it, and costs you days. Reza Bagheri, an EE intern from @UCIEngineering, spent his summer at @freeform_future working on the acceptance test that catches them first. Plug a board in, start the test, come back a few minutes later and know whether it meets spec. His work on Skyfall's auger motor took him through the entire tech stack, from the electronics on the machine down into the firmware and the code running on the board. Electrical, mechanical, software: same floor, same problems. That's how the future of manufacturing gets built. If that's how you want to work, come find us. freeform.co/careers#electric…

In the spring, Lucia Ayala was solving Navier-Stokes on a whiteboard in her @MITEngineering thermofluids class. A few months later she was designing the fluid systems themselves. She spent three months here at @freeform_future working on two major projects. One focused on keeping oxygen out of a build chamber where the byproducts of every print are reactive enough that a single leak is a real problem. The other, a life cycle test she built from scratch, because no existing model could predict how a critical component in our build module would actually perform. She got to present her findings to the whole company. "It feels like my engineering work is really taken seriously here. I'm treated as a full member of the team." @MIT, keep sending us people like Lucia. 🙏 #mechanicalengineering #advancedmanufacturing

Jack Fowler spent his summer at @freeform_future on a question that decides how fast our machines can actually run. He came from @NCState, where he does research at @NCStateCAMAL, one of the top collegiate additive labs in the country. That work showed him how little process control conventional metal printers have. He went looking for a company that had solved it. We were the only one. Here he designed a set of experiments on laser and control parameters, built the tooling to run them, and pushed the physics as far as it would go. By the end of the summer we were printing faster than ever. Everyone here is responsible for pushing the boundaries of what's possible, even interns. freeform.co/careers

Liam King is a rising junior at the @umichme. Before @freeform_future, he was already machining components for Michigan's @MRacingFSAE race car and printing parts for the Air Force through research in the university's Smart Materials lab. He found Freeform at the university career fair, stopped in his tracks by a metal part sitting on the table. His first reaction: "Whoa, this geometry is ridiculous. How did you do that?" He had to know how it was made. After he showed up in LA, he didn't expect the level of trust an intern would get here. On his first day, he was integrating parts onto Skyfall, the most advanced manufacturing platform on the planet. "The amount of trust that they place here in people's engineering skills is really quite astonishing. I've learned just about as much here in these last few months as I have in years of school." That's what it's all about. Apply Today: freeform.co/careers #GoBlue #MechanicalEngineering #Internship #AdvancedManufacturing #Freeform #UofM #UMich

Bradley Kern graduated from @CalPoly with a mechanical engineering degree. Before starting his master's this fall, he spent the summer at @freeform_future . His assignment: an automated system to destroy Skyfall's massive air filters without manual handling or downtime. Bradley designed it from scratch: a 900kg carbon steel weldment, rated for 150,000 lbs of hydraulic force, that takes a 52-inch filter down to 8. "I've done more here in a month than I've done in twelve weeks at NASA." That's the kind of ownership we hand our interns at Freeform. Critical projects that outlast the internship itself. Apply today. freeform.co/careers #MechanicalEngineering #Hiring

Hans Milaniak is a mechanical engineering intern, a rising senior, and a diehard @Purdue Boilermaker, same as our CEO @ErikPalitsch. Purdue talent runs deep at @freeform_future, and Hans fits right in. He found us at a career fair, walked over out of curiosity, and spent the summer owning a critical piece of Skyfall, the kind of ownership most early-career engineers wait years for. "I know I'm going to be a significantly better engineer in the future because of my experience here." Frontier engineering problems need great builders. This is the place to be.
