🛑The backlash from what happened at the Ed Sheeran concert in MetLife Stadium in New Jersey is growing and for good reason. Jewish and Israeli voices are calling the scene horrifying. Others are asking how something like this was allowed to unfold at one of America’s biggest concert venues. This was not just “politics at a concert.” It was a disgrace!!!!!! At the very least, the public deserves an explanation and an apology.

Sorry, one more comment on this Micah Lasher "Judaism = Zionism" thing. Obviously Judaism has been diasporic for nearly all of the last two thousand years. But you can actually take this even further back. Historians generally don’t describe the religion practiced by the Hebrew people as "Judaism" until after the Babylonian captivity. Babylon is where the Old Testament was written down. From literally the very beginning of rabbinic -- as opposed to sacrificial -- worship, Judaism has been a religion of diaspora.

There are aspects of Zionism that have been rooted in Judaism for millennia. Many parts of it are less than two centuries old. You're voicing a concept of the relationship between the two things which is very contemporary and political and intended for that purpose, as though Zionism is just something some Jews think, like the fact that most Jews vote Democratic or maybe that a lot are fans of baseball. That's actually not how it is. It would be very hard to write any history of Jews in the last hundred and fifty years which doesn't basically agree more or less with what he is saying here. "Bound up" actually well captures the deep interconnected but also the non-identity and conflict. And that is entirely with consistent with the fact that there are non- and anti-Zionist Jews and always have been. People can disagree with his claim. Maybe things will evolve in a different direction. But calling it "shameful" makes it out like it's this crazy or dishonest or illegitimate claim or somehow obviously untrue. And that doesn't wash historically or by the professed beliefs of the majority of Jews. Part of the incorrectness of what you're saying is that Zionism has always meant a lot of things - and it's used by online critics today as though it's synonymous with Greater Israel maximalism, which is demonstrably false. There are liberal and conservatism versions of it; there are versions that never envisioned a state of any kind.
