We need new leaders in Washington. I’m running for Senate to be one. Let’s go.

RIP Steve Albini—an unparalleled producer and an exceptional writer. His 1993 essay 'The Problem with Music' is the most clear-eyed examination of money in the arts that I have ever read. Every artist in every discipline should read it. thebaffler.com/salvos/the-pr…

This is so important to emphasize: A LOT of student newspapers are wholly independent from the universities they cover. If you're reading, watching, or listening to content from these places, consider giving money to support their work.

I have gotten a few questions about how to donate to student journalism outlets without supporting Columbia itself. @ColumbiaSpec is an independent nonprofit with zero financial ties to the university, if you want to kick them some money. specpublishing.com/donate-1

@repdeliaramirez, @AOC, and @BennieGThompson have joined as cosponsors on the Living Wage for Musicians Act! This bill would create a new, additional, direct-to-artists royalty to get artists paid fairly. Thank you reps Ramirez, Ocasio-Cortez, and Thompson for joining us!

Thank you @sagaftra for supporting the Living Wage for Musicians Act! Musicians, music workers, indie labels, and music organizations can sign on to support this legislation to implement a new, direct-to-artists streaming royalty on our website. 💪

It takes more than 800,000 streams per month to make the equivalent of a $15/hour job, and the vast majority of music artists on platforms like Spotify never get to that number. I introduced the Living Wage for Musicians Act to fight for the fair pay that musicians deserve.

UMAW is thrilled to share what we’ve been working on for the last few years: The Living Wage for Musicians Act, with co-lead sponsors @RepRashida and @JamaalBowmanNY 💪

We asked musicians how their lives would change if they were paid fairly for streaming. Bands of all sizes responded, from small local bands to touring bands with large audiences. Here’s what they said:

“The average L.A. studio musician played on 91 sessions for streaming originals in 2022, according to Local 47 numbers, and their total wages were ‘below the local poverty line,’ AFM officials say”

I wrote about the soul-sucking labor of self-promotion and "audience building" that basically every artist/journalist/creative worker has to do now ... unless they are very lucky vox.com/culture/2024/2/1/240…

Also in light of today's news, me and a couple of friends just created a Discord group for music journos + artists who care about the future of music journalism and want to have a place to talk music, possible solutions, etc. DM if interested.

here’s a story I’ve been working on for a few months, about how professional musicians who’ve chosen motherhood deal with an industry that’s poorly equipped to support them. we dug deep, but barely scratched the surface. pitchfork.com/features/artic…

One stat you won’t find in your Spotify Wrapped is how much artists are paid for all that listening on the platform.
The max possible in 2023 is $0.003 per stream. And in 2024, Spotify will stop paying anything AT ALL for 2/3 of the tracks on the platform.

I went to a friends school. Alums of friends schools worldwide can and should, I feel, unite in standing in solidarity against all forms of violence. It’s the reason many of our families chose these schools for us even if we weren’t Quaker. I hope to see more from the community. – at Brooklyn, NY

Spotify would rather not operate in Uruguay than pay musicians more… they are closing up shop in response to a government regulation for “equitable remuneration” - the same compulsory royalties that have been the focus of the UK #BrokenRecord campaign musically.com/2023/11/20/spo…
