What do you wish someone had told you when you/your child first got a dyslexia diagnosis? #dyslexia

Anybody with a dyslexic kid understands the struggle. It's not a game. You have to be willing to study, learn, and battle powerful entities... and never give up. They're depending on you regardless of how inconvenient it may be, or how many friends you may lose.
"Having #dyslexia is like living in two worlds..." @KJWinEducation recounts what his daughter described to him (her illustration here). She brought him, in part, to this work.

Kids always know whether we believe in them or not.
Some kids need us to believe in them before they can believe in themselves.
This is often true for our most vulnerable readers who also have experienced 3 years of reading failure more …

Before you all come saying how this is missing something or it is wrong in "x" or "y "part, the big idea here is that when kids are struggling we need to be diagnostic and make no assumption, and that what often presents as a comprehension problem is of often not so, because it is rooted in a weakness of a more foundational skill.

This is what being able to read 80% of words looks like. Though 80% sounds like a high percentage, when it comes to reading comprehension, this percentage falls short of the accuracy level kids need to possess to comprehend text.
In fact, kids' accuracy should fall between 95% and 98% accuracy to derive meaning from texts.
Stop writing #IEPgoals that have 80% acc. 4 every criteria. 🛑
Can you comprehend this 100 word p. w/ 20 words missing?
#Comprehension requires mastery of approx. 95-98% of the words readers encounter. 💡(Laufer, 1989; Hu & Nation, 2000; Schmitt et al., 2011)

The researchers found that reading on screens lowered reading comprehension skills among younger students, those in elementary and MS grades.”
