The death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person. The common good can be safeguarded and the requirements of justice can be met without recourse to capital punishment: effective systems of detention have been developed that protect citizens while at the same time do not completely deprive those who are guilty of the possibility of redemption. #NoDeathPenalty

Sean Burke. Grant Taylor. Absolutely outstanding relief pitching by that duo. These White Sox are on a destiny-like run. Feels like some divine intervention is involved too. Will Venable’s squad is 4-0 in the playoffs, a win from the ALCS. What a story out of the South Side.

The White Sox are the first team in MLB history to win 4 straight games in a postseason with their starter going 4 or fewer innings in each of them. They were already the first to win 3. All on the road. Wed in Chicago will be nuts. One win from the ALCS after 3, 100 loss yrs.

The only other time the White Sox clinched a playoff series at home? 1906, Game 6 of the World Series over the Cubs.

Pope Leo this week repudiated a major teaching used by the Catholic Church since at least the fifth century to evaluate when countries might be justified in waging wars, in a move experts said could have long-reaching impact. For @Reuters

Pope Leo has issued a stark warning about AI in his first encyclical. Cardinal Czerny tells me "Pope Leo the 13th issued his call for the protection of human dignity without real dialog with those who were imperiling that dignity. This time Pope Leo (the 14th) is issuing the warnings in dialog with those who are responsible for AI... this is an extraordinary step forward."

No nation, no society, and no international order can call itself just and humane if it measures its success solely by power or prosperity while neglecting those who live at the margins. Indeed, Christ’s love for the least and the forgotten compels us to reject every form of selfishness that leaves the poor and the vulnerable invisible.
