The mess that Avanti have got themselves into over Rest Day working and rostered Sundays makes me smile. The whole thing is about Management (and the DfT) not heeding the lessons of history. /1

32 year anniversary of Cowden today. I arrived just after the contingent of Drivers from Norwood. Must have been 30 of them. Some of them wouldn’t have been borne in 1994, let alone on the railway. What a depot. Never forget.

This telephone concentrator on display in a museum in Porto. Exactly the same as the one I used in York Control in 1967.

Long weekend in Porto with the SWT Desiro deal principals Wilson, Rigby and Howard, plus wives. Easy jet pushed back on time. We may talk modern rolling stock over a glass of Port.

🧵Substantively it is complete. And totally honoured one of my former Captains agreed to write the Foreword. Took a long time to come up with the title, which I think works?

That’s exactly what it is like. Even in the ICU.

Yes, one of the biggest issues is that what happens in the control centres rarely gets cascaded to the stations and passengers in a helpful way

At 80. I’m quite interested in Mr Burnham’s NCS. My understanding is that most bed blocking is caused by lack of space rather than cash. So who’s going to provide the space? NCS or Private Sector? If it’s NCS, where is the pump priming capital coming from?

So, no off peak London to Eastbourne service from Monday. Shuttle between HH and East. Said to be due to the need for further speed restrictions due to COT. Just how bad is the South Central infrastructure?

Quinn Sullivan - "Summer of 69" (Bryan Adams Cover) youtu.be/4ObuJj1XNGg?is=Vk-C… via @YouTube @railnigel I’m a bit of a snob about Summer of ‘69 covers, as you know. This one really isn’t too bad at all.

Remarkable how quickly the garden is coming back after some rain. Border plants that were yellow are now green. Lawns have a faint shade of green that was entirely straw last week. Lots of Hydrangeas are still in intensive care though. All the water butts are full again.

Alan Galley’s funeral today in Mortlake. Great operator. With a wicked sense of humour. SWR and GTR behaving themselves. Thanks for everything Alan.

@swtrains_watch Running railways with the objective of hitting a savings target isn’t new. From even before my time as an ops manager that was the primary objective. To achieve that objective safely BR had a training system that produced safety competent junior managers. 1/8

I would not want a middle manager, almost certainly without the training their predecessors had, being the defender of my safety, let alone others. 7/8

I would like to think that Laurence, who has actually had safety of the line responsibility, has the moral fortitude to do that. The idea of someone at DfT/HMT taking such decisions makes my blood run cold. 8/8
