first draft of an idea i've been thinking for a while: Creative Constraints. When you remove every option that doesn't belong, what remains is only what does. That's not limitation. That's the work. The makers who produce things that last — furniture, type, tools, buildings — aren't working with more freedom than everyone else. They have a clearer sense of what they're trying to say. And the discipline to say only that. Less is not about removal. It's about honesty. Every decision either belongs or it doesn't. The tighter the constraint, the sharper the thinking. Limitation is where taste lives. Good things are felt before they're understood. If you have to explain why it's good, it isn't yet. This is harder now. The new tools can produce anything, instantly, at scale. Which means the only thing that separates good work from everything else is the quality of the judgment behind it. The danger was never the tool. The danger is handing your taste to it. Craft is a decision made over and over again, at every scale, until there's nothing left to decide. Creative Constraints is a publication for people who understand this.
