Labour’s political illiteracy strikes again.
Apparently, teaching Ukrainian at GCSE is now a priority.
Here’s a radical thought: how about ensuring children in England can read, write and speak English properly first?
And if global competitiveness is the ambition, perhaps prioritise languages with greater international economic reach. Dare I say, as someone who speaks several European languages, Ukrainian isn’t exactly at the top of that list.
Meanwhile, Lucy Powell is so confident in her announcement that replies are restricted. Nothing says confidence quite like limiting debate.

I really should learn another language and often ponder which. I can’t think of a single time or known a single person that thought they’d get some benefit from learning Ukrainian. These clowns are cray-cray.

True story! When I was a professor (teaching history) I started my class by handing out some paperwork.
A couple students said, "You shouldn't print things out on paper."
Me: "What else would I print it on?"
Student: "We shouldn't use paper. It's killing the environment."
Me: "Who told you that?"
Student: "Another professor."
Me: "How is it killing the environment?"
Student: "Because we're cutting down trees to make it. Soon we won't have anymore trees."
Me: "... Trees are a renewable resource. We grow trees on farms and plantations for the sole purpose of being cut down and pulped into paper."
Student: "What? That's not true. There's no such thing as tree farms."
Me: "Have you ever seen Christmas trees for sale? Like in parking lots and around grocery stores? Do you think we have a limited number of Christmas trees? Or does it make more sense that we grow them specifically to cut down and use as Christmas trees? If you read the signs, they even say they're from Christmas tree FARMS."
Student: "..."
(It was at this moment, I saw that everything clicked in their head. Their facial expression, the way their eyebrows shot for their hairline)
I went on to talk about historic deforestation (and why some rainforests were targeted) because I love history like that, lol - but I was genuinely surprised people were teaching that paper was somehow killing the Amazon rainforest.
Also, tree farms aren't rare, right? Maybe it was because I was in the FFA, but I'm always a little surprised when people don't know what goes on in farming, haha
