Some folks had been asking if terrestrial isopods exhibit maternal care and whether they lay eggs or give birth to young so here's a photo thread on their reproduction process. After mating, the female's eggs are produced and stored in her marsupium for about a month. [1/7]

This is bound to be a great episode - who doesn't love jumping spiders? There's one hopping around in my car that would surely enjoy the episode during tomorrow's drive...
E28! Pagentry, ferocity and excellent eyesight! @spiderdayNight joins me to explore all that makes the jumping spider special. Plus, what it means to care about invertebrates, and the frustration of their overwhelming prevalence yet relative obscurity. Www.grubbinginthefilth.com

Rule number one: let the kids see your excitement. Let them see you handle invertebrates and enjoy the tickling, the cuteness, the funny legs etc. After 30 seconds they will all want a go

Yes! I agree completely! Woodlice are secretly extraordinary creatures - I love telling kids about their social lives, and weird adaptations to land- but also kids love some of the gruesome details about cannibalism and woodlouse spiders!

When I talk to kids, I surprise them with the most ridiculous and colourful species I can find. At first they don't even believe they're insects! I also have a fake bee prop, dragonfly earrings, etc that they can play with. It's less scary for them to interact w/ a prop (usually)

Some ants will create many openings to their nests when preparing for a nuptial flight. Looks like these Messor may be doing that (or, they just need some ventilation for the granaries)! - Miles
