🐋🚨 The Senate votes MONDAY on a bill that would weaken the Endangered Species Act! For more than 50 years, the Endangered Species Act has protected dozens of species from going extinct. But S.5653, the Senate’s permitting reform bill, would rush the scientific reviews that protect endangered animals so development projects can move faster. It would also weaken the Clean Water Act, cutting oversight of the rivers, streams, and wetlands that wildlife depend on. We can’t let Congress gut two of the most successful environmental laws in history! ⚠️ Here’s how to take action TODAY 👇 1️⃣ EMAIL your senators at vfar.org/oppose5653 📧 2️⃣ CALL them next 📞 Dial (202) 224-3121, ask for your senator’s office, and say: “Hello, my name is [NAME], and I’m a voter from [CITY/TOWN]. I’m calling to urge Senator [NAME] to vote NO on S.5653, the permitting reform bill. It would gut protections under the Endangered Species Act and the Clean Water Act and put species on the brink of extinction at even greater risk. Please vote NO. Thank you!” ☎️ Then call back for your second senator! Your senators need to hear from voters before Monday. Leave a voicemail if you don't get through, and share this with everyone who cares about wildlife 🔁💜

This is an unbelievable development in the life of this historic nest. Thank you to @nycbirdalliance and @NYSDEC for quickly acting to stop further destruction.
Today the water tank that these five young barn owls called home was disassembled. They no longer have a safe place to roost. Cont’d

🦉 84% of dead birds of prey found in NYC tested positive for anticoagulant rat poison, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's Wildlife Unit. Most bait boxes in NYC use poison that stops blood from clotting, so a poisoned rat bleeds internally over several days before dying. That means the rat stays alive long enough to be caught and eaten by a predator, and the poison moves straight up the chain. Flaco, the beloved eagle-owl who escaped the Central Park Zoo, had four different rodenticides in his system when he died. Meanwhile, NYC still has an estimated 3 million rats — this approach isn't even solving the problem it's meant to solve. The good news: there are ways to reduce rat populations that don't rely on poison. Rodent-proof trash containers, sealed composting, and blocking off burrows and food sources all reduce rat numbers by cutting off what rats need to survive — without harming the hawks, owls, and other wildlife that share our city. Sign the petition and tell NYC lawmakers to invest in solutions that work for people and wildlife alike: 🔗 buff.ly/85TK4Pw

We’re so grateful to the kind people who stopped to help this red-tailed hawk on the side of the Garden State Parkway. She'd been hit by a vehicle and was standing but unable to fly. On arrival at the clinic, she was weak and showing signs of concussion and some internal bleeding. During three days of care, she’s gradually become stronger and is now perching strongly and much more alert. Also defensive! This brave girl is ready for transfer to our friends at The Raptor Trust, where she’ll receive excellent ongoing care and hopefully be returned to the wild. What a lucky hawk! It’s so rewarding to witness such a turnaround for a beautiful young raptor just at the beginning of her journey. 📷: Suzanne Highland, Finley Eisenberg

This great blue heron was found tangled in fishing line and hanging upside down in a Staten Island park.  What a terrible ordeal this must have been. The fish hook was embedded in one elbow, and the line was tightly constricting the wing.  We removed the hook and line, cleaned the wound, and provided fluids and oxygen, as well as medication for pain, stress and infection, but the heron was too unstable to do more.  It's too early to know if the bird, named Galatea, will be able to pull through or how serious the damage is to the wing. For now, we simply hope she can rest overnight and be stable enough in the next day or so to do a more thorough exam and imaging. Poorly discarded fishing tackle is a pervasive problem across the city parks. Please discard all fishing tackle properly, and if you see any lines or hooks left behind, please take it upon yourself to collect and dispose of it.  Many thanks to the Urban Park Rangers who rescued Galatea! 📷: Rachel Frank

I did a research project with a few HS kids this summer out in Edgemere where we monitored terns flying back to the bird preserve with fish and tried to learn as much as we could about their foraging geography. Wrote about it in Landlubber! Link below

Tonight, a carriage horse collapsed and died in Central Park. We do not yet know this horse’s name, age, history, or what caused their death — but we do know this: no horse should spend their life pulling a carriage through the streets of Manhattan. We have seen this before. Ryder. Lady. Aisha. Charlie. Smoothie. And now another horse whose life ended on the pavement. This moment demands more than outrage. It demands action. On Thursday, the City Council will reintroduce Ryder’s Law — legislation to finally transition New York City away from horse carriages and retire the horses to sanctuaries. That future will include the workers, too. Carriage drivers deserve a real transition plan with stable jobs, protections, and benefits — and we are ready to work with TWU and all stakeholders to make that happen. But doing nothing is not an option. Another horse is dead on the streets of New York City. For the horses. For the workers. For New York City. Pass Ryder’s Law.

Members of our staff rescued this peregrine falcon today from a courtyard on the Upper West Side, where he likely collided with a window, suffering a wing fracture. The break, to the right ulna, was severe enough to puncture the skin. Our vet tech Eugene cleaned the wound and splinted the wing while the bird was under anesthesia, and since surgery may be necessary, we’ll be quickly sending the peregrine to our friends at The Raptor Trust. Thanks to his ankle bands, we know that this bird is 12 years old! That’s at the high end of the typical lifespan for a peregrine, so Leroy has been around the block a few times and is a fighter.🥷 Once threatened with extinction in the U.S., peregrines have rebounded in NYC and elsewhere thanks largely to environmental protections passed in the 1970s. Among them was the Endangered Species Act, which narrowly escaped being gutted yesterday in Congress. Thank you to everyone who took action to oppose the bill! Please keep this beautiful survivor in your thoughts. 📷: Suzanne Highlanf

We've got baby squirrels! A *lot* of them. Our baby squirrel meter is at FULL. 🚨Please call or text us at 646-306-2862 before bringing healthy baby squirrels to the clinic. You can also search ahnow.org for a squirrel rehabber close to you. We will continue to admit any babies or adults in need of urgent care because of injury.🚨 While you're waiting for guidance, keep the baby warm and please do not provide any food or water. Feeding a baby squirrel improper food or using the wrong technique usually causes serious harm.
