On Friday, I met with Governor-elect Deb Haaland to initiate the transition of power following her historic election this week. I’m confident that Governor-elect Haaland will keep our state moving in the right direction because she shares New Mexicans’ vision for a prosperous and equitable future for all. My team and I will assist in any way we can during the transition.
In New Mexico, investing in education means investing in every part of a student’s future, including the opportunities they have beyond the classroom.
It was an honor to join the Taos community for the ribbon cutting of a new athletic and training facility at Taos High School, honoring the legacy of beloved coach Daniel “Dan Dan” Barrone Jr. Coach Barrone dedicated his life to Taos students, and his legacy will live on through the generations of young athletes who will learn, grow and build confidence in this space.
New Mexico is making historic investments in education because our students deserve every opportunity to succeed, in the classroom and beyond.
More investment. More jobs. More opportunities for New Mexicans.
We're opening the door to new economic development in communities across our state by nominating 65 areas in 22 counties for federal Opportunity Zone designation:
-Nearly 230,000 New Mexicans live in these communities.
-More than half of the selected areas are rural.
-The goal: attract private investment, support local businesses and create good-paying jobs.
From our biggest cities to our rural and Tribal communities, we're working to make sure more New Mexicans have the opportunity to thrive.

Last night, New Mexico made history by electing Deb Haaland as the first Native American woman governor in our nation's history.
Under Governor-elect Haaland’s leadership, our state will continue moving forward with compassion, integrity and respect for all New Mexicans. I congratulate Governor-elect Haaland on her historic victory, and l look forward to inviting her to the Governor’s Office soon to discuss a smooth and productive transition.
Happy Election Day, New Mexico!
Whether you voted early, mailed in your ballot, or are heading to the polls today, you can be confident your vote will be counted.
Thank you for making your voice heard.
New Mexico families are facing devastating losses after historic flooding swept through our communities.
More than 600 homes were damaged or destroyed. Families have been displaced, roads and bridges have washed away, and entire communities face a long road to recovery.
That's why I've formally requested a major disaster declaration from the federal government to bring additional resources to the New Mexicans who need them most.
Since the flooding began, we've mobilized rescue teams, deployed the National Guard and made more than $42 million available for emergency response and recovery.
We will continue doing everything in our power to help our communities rebuild.
To every New Mexican impacted by these floods: We are with you, and we will not leave you to face this recovery alone. Find resources and assistance at governor.state.nm.us/floodin…

Great news for Taos business and tourism! This week, I met with Town of Taos officials and community members to cut the ribbon on a new passenger terminal at Taos Regional Airport. ✈️
The state put nearly $11.7 million into this $16.2 million project, nearly three of every four dollars. The new building has more than 7,300 square feet, with a passenger lounge, baggage handling, a pilot lounge and a conference room the community can use. The old terminal held about 30 people, and its restrooms were outside.
Taos now has nonstop flights to four destinations, including year-round service to Denver. From 2005 to 2018 the town had no commercial air service at all. This airport will bring even more visitors — and tourist dollars — to one of New Mexico’s premier arts and recreation communities.

I voted early! 🗳️ You have until Saturday, Oct. 31 (HALLOWEEN DAY!) to do the same, or vote on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3. Get out and vote, New Mexico!

Every New Mexican deserves to cast their ballot safely and securely.
We've strengthened election protections, taken steps to safeguard polling places and are working to ensure early voting ballot boxes remain secure and monitored. New Mexico’s elections rank seventh in the nation according to the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Elections Performance Index.
New Mexicans can be confident that their ballot will count whether they vote early, by mail or on Election Day.
Heavy rains and historic flooding have hit New Mexico families hard. Homes damaged, roads washed out, power lines downed and countless lives disrupted. Many people are still cleaning up, but nobody should have to recover alone.
My office has put together a page with the help and resources available to you, from emergency assistance to cleanup and rebuilding support:

I want New Mexicans to know what President Trump’s reckless policy change on methane emissions means for them. Nothing changes for our state’s rules. Our methane standards are some of the strongest in the nation, and they stay in place. Operators here still have to inspect for leaks, limit venting and flaring, and capture 98 percent of their natural gas by the end of this year. We’re also moving forward with our own program to find and fix the largest leaks.
These rules work. Since 2020, New Mexico’s oil and gas production has more than doubled. On our side of the Permian Basin, methane intensity is less than half of what it is in Texas. Our rules have kept an additional $125 million worth of natural gas from being wasted. That’s revenue that helps fund universal child care and other programs New Mexico families count on.
What does change is the standard everywhere else. Pollution doesn’t stop at the state line. When the federal standard drops, families in southeastern New Mexico are the ones breathing what drifts across the border from operators held to weaker rules.
So we’ll keep doing what has worked. We’ll make New Mexico’s case during the federal comment period, work with other states to share what we’ve learned, and keep showing that responsible production and clean air can go hand in hand
Dolores Huerta fought for working people everywhere, but she was a New Mexican first. Born in Dawson, she never stopped coming home to New Mexico, and she never stopped pushing us to do more for the people who care for our children and keep this state running.
Dolores was a force of nature. She gave farm workers a voice, and she gave all of us ‘Sí, se puede.’ I was lucky to call her a friend, and I’ll never forget the day she came to our office to accept the state’s thanks for her extraordinary service. In 2023, I was proud to sign the law making April 10 Dolores Huerta Day in New Mexico, so every generation here will know her name.
“Well into her nineties, she spoke hard truths regardless of the personal costs. She showed up for people who were at risk, taken advantage of, underserved and unheard until the day she died.
My heart is with her family and the Dolores Huerta Foundation. Rest in power, Dolores.
Our name dates back centuries, but our history runs even deeper. From Indigenous communities who have called this land home since time immemorial to the cultures and traditions that make our state unlike anywhere else, New Mexico has a story all its own.
Proud of our history. Proud of our people. Proud to be New Mexico.
¡Viva Nuevo México! 🌶️
New Mexico is creating jobs and growing our economy.
We added 11,200 jobs over the past year, ranking 7th in the nation for job growth. That's more than 4x the national growth rate.
From construction and manufacturing to health care, we're seeing growth across industries and expanding opportunities for New Mexicans.
Changing New Mexico’s name won’t lower your electricity bill, put food on the table or make health care more affordable. New Mexicans deserve solutions, not distractions.
Our history, culture and people make this place unlike anywhere else—and we’re proud to keep building a future where New Mexico families can thrive. ¡Viva Nuevo México!
This tired New America bit again? 🙄 You have to ask — what policy failure is Trump trying to distract Americans from this time?
Let me repeat: New Mexico was New Mexico long before the United States existed and we’ll be New Mexico forevermore. And while we’re talking about our great state, Americans should also know we’ve been busy delivering universal, no cost child care. We’re also the only state that fully replaced health care subsidies that were gutted by Trump and congressional Republicans.
Independent experts say our elections are among the most secure in the nation. It’s just that Trump can’t seem to accept that voters are rewarding Democrats for policies that make life easier for working families.
¡Viva Nuevo Mexico! 🌶️
