ALT The London Loo Alliance are seriously concerned that there has been insufficient consideration about the importance of public toilet provision in the drafting of the updated London Plan. Whilst public toilets are referred to in three policies (Healthy Streets and the Public Realm, the Nighttime Economy, and Visitor Infrastructure), there is very little detail. Provision of public toilets is too important to inclusive, healthy and strong communities to be an afterthought. The 2021 update of the London Plan had a full policy on public toilets, Policy S6. This was not a perfect policy but there was substance. We had hoped that the refreshed Plan would build on this, instead a backwards step has been made. This is a missed opportunity at a time when there is growing awareness about the importance of public toilet provision. We are calling for Policy S6 to be reinstated, and for greater consideration of public toilet provision across all policies.

ALT Text reads, Continued) Public toilet provision matters for so many different reasons. Without good provision, London will not be the inclusive and welcoming city we all want to it to be. Poor-quality public toilet provision impacts all Londoners but disproportionately affects older and disabled people, those with health conditions, pregnant women, itinerant workers, such as delivery drivers, families with young children and many more. This is about inclusion, public health, the right to a dignity at work and much more. Poor provision means many Londoners are not free to access London’s public spaces because of fears about the lack of accessible toilets. Good quality public toilet provision can improve quality of life for many people. It is good for local economies (encouraging footfall and dwell time) and it is good for people.

ALT Our three council motions: protect residents from the climate crisis, stop use of Palantir in the NHS, and end Lambeth's complicity with genocide.

ALT Motion 1: Protect residents from the climate crisis. We want to introduce a climate resilience plan to protect residents from the extreme heat that this year led to over 2800 deaths, some of them in Lambeth. We’re calling on Shell Oil, who’s HQ is in Lambeth, to contribute to the costs of the crisis they’ve helped cause. We want to host a climate emergency summit next year to help councils adapt to our rapidly changing climate. Finally, we’re calling on the government to stop making the crisis worse by approving new drilling and polluting projects, such as the new drilling Labour approved just yesterday. LABOUR’S AMENDMENT Labour’s amendment to this motion is concerned with removing criticism of the government and praising their commitment to the climate – but we have to ask if it’s possible to be fighting against the climate crisis if you’re also refusing to oppose new oil drilling.

ALT Motion 2: Stop the use of Palantir in the NHS Palantir is a deeply unethical company involved in military and intelligence deals and co-founded by the authoritarian far-right billionaire Peter Thiel. We’re joining the British Medical Association, other organisations, and the many residents who say the government should not be handing NHS patient data and control of NHS services to this company. We’re calling on the government and the three Lambeth NHS trusts to stop working with Palantir. LABOUR’S AMENDMENT Labour disagrees, and have moved an amendment that would remove our call on the government and local trusts to stop working with Palantir. Maybe they’ve been talking to Tom Watson.

ALT We want no more complicity with the genocide in Palestine at any level, from the British government to Lambeth’s local government. Lambeth’s pension fund remains invested in companies complicit with the genocide and the last council admin decided to sign IT procurement contracts with companies supporting it, meaning Lambeth’s local government remains complicit. We and thousands of residents want an end to links with the Israeli regime; no more complicity in pension funds, investment, or procurement; and action from the British government to end arms sales and assist the International Criminal Court. LABOUR’S AMENDMENT This’ll shock you: Labour’s amendment refuses to call what is happening a genocide or an apartheid system, removes the demand that the British government and Lambeth Council should not be complicit, stops us calling for an end to arms sales, and more. Labour’s amendment makes it clear they believe enough has been done, and no more action is needed from the UK government.
