Another thoughtful case for why intelligence isn't consciousness, from @anilkseth, Ned Block and Giulio Tononi in Nature.
It brings to mind Irreducible by semiconductor pioneer Federico Faggin, who argues consciousness is fundamental, not computed.

Fascinating research suggests the brain can still process language under anesthesia.
It made me think of *The Diving Bell and the Butterfly*, and what we might learn about patients unable to communicate. How do we detect awareness?

Could AI trigger the next smartphone supercycle?
@cristianoamon joins @alexeheath at Snapdragon Summit to discuss AI agents, smart glasses, data centers and 6G.
Our Snapdragon Insiders also got a front-row seat to the recording. Not a bad Summit experience!

I think since Android runs on Arm hardware the 'definitive' Googlebook experience will be on @Snapdragon hardware. They also offer better battery life (and performance on battery) vs the competition.
Well, this doesn't sound great. It's going to be really interesting to see how ARM and x86 Googlebook variants compare. xda-developers.com/google-wa…
👏👏👏
It's kind of incredible how far ahead Qualcomm is over Intel right now.
The Intel Core Ultra 5 325 in the Lenovo Googlebook 15 came out this year, while the Snapdragon X Elite in the XPS Googlebook came out in June 2024, but it beats Intel very handidly.

This is definitely going to be a fascinating conversation. And IMHO this is a critical topic we need to wrestle with immediately, before too much damage is done.
I’m looking forward to this conversation with @jonkabatzinn in New York City on October 14, hosted by Steve Stein. We’ll talk about what happens when we begin to accept “pretend empathy” from machines, and why we need to protect what makes our relationships human. Join us in person at All Souls or via livestream. There are, apparently, quite a few excellent Snapdragon-powered devices on sale for Prime Day.
But if you’re looking to spend slightly less, Ed Yong’s *An Immense World* is $1.99 on Kindle.
If you have any interest at all in consciousness, it’s a wonderful exploration of how completely different the experienced world can be depending on the senses you have.
Ed Yong is also just an extraordinary science writer.
Possibly the best $1.99 you’ll spend today.

A fascinating Nobel Prize this year.
Optogenetics lets scientists do more than observe correlations between brain activity and memories, feelings or behaviors. By switching specific neurons on and off with light, they can start testing causal relationships.
We’re getting better at mapping how the physical brain produces what we do and feel.
Which, of course, leaves the rather enormous question of why any of it *feels like something* from the inside.

Well, this is rather nicely timed.
A few days after I posted about dark matter and the point where physics starts bumping into philosophy, the LUX-ZEPLIN experiment has recorded a particle interaction researchers can't yet explain.
Very definitely *not* a discovery of dark matter.
But possibly another tiny crack in the door.

Told you it was big! Doesn't get much more exciting than this.
