My goodness, John Burnside was a writer. And a lovely man in person too, the one occasion I met him. This piece from a very old @LRB has stayed with me. lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v30/n08/… “Much of the time, the dead are with us…”

So true: I’ve judged comps & sent to comps, judged prizes & sent, am rarely longlisted. Once in a blue moon I win. You just keep developing, trying, a poem sent dozens of times not longlisted will place. Judges have different tastes, poems are living things with ups & downs

We're very sorry to hear about the passing of poet and writer John Burnside. Here's one of his wonderful poems, 'Late Show'.

This is such awful news.
We are devastated by the death of our beloved writer John Burnside, one of the most acclaimed writers of his generation. Hannah Westland, Publishing Director at Jonathan Cape, says: ‘To read him was to feel a lighting up of the darkness.’ Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones, especially his children, grandchild and wife Sarah.
