"Currently there are just 50 parent-infant teams across the UK. It is estimated that there are over 100,000 babies in the UK at risk of disorganised attachment. So teams only reach around 5 per cent of vulnerable families."
Tamora Langley has written for @politicshome about the fact that too many babies are suffering from a lack of early-months bonding.

It’s only a matter of time before your baby is talking up a storm!
Over the past two days we’ve looked at the role that mom’s voice plays in helping to organize newborns’ receptive and expressive language around the native tongue to which they were exposed during the final trimester of pregnancy.
And yesterday we focused in on newborns earliest vocalizations: cries, grunts, and squeaks.
But it won’t be long before your baby begins making a much happier set of sounds - which also mark a first verbal milestone: cooing.
Coos tend to be a combination of vowel sounds and laughter, which make them a true delight. They are not only an expression of contentedness but an early form of socialization.
Listen here as baby Millie (shown at 4 months of age) experiments with her voice. Could there be a better sound than a happy baby?
If you hadn’t/haven’t started already, the cooing phase is a perfect time to really get focused on serve and return interactions. When your baby coos, coo right back, taking turns as you go! (Don’t forget to give your baby wait time to respond.)
And get all the cooing video you can as well, because your little one is on the march to full blown speech - and this adorable phase won’t last long.
Tomorrow we’ll look at the next developmental progression here: Babbling.

"When infants and infant mental health are rendered invisible there is in effect age discrimination, which I would argue there is in the lack of provision of specialist mental health services for infants as a distinct age group," Graham says. #SpeakUpForBabies

Irrespective of whether we find it uncomfortable, inconvenient or challenging, the findings from research show that our earliest years and relationships are crucial for lifelong mental and physical health.
If we’re serious about public health, we have to invest in infancy.

😂 Another great example of a serve & return interaction! Responsive interactions like this help infants and young children build strong brain architecture.

I couldn’t love this game any more if I tried.
Watch how mom engages baby in a two step process here. There’s the gentle head tilt and the “ahhh” sound.
Initially baby manages the tilt, but not the sound. So what does mom do? She adds it for her and keeps the game going.
And next time around baby gets both parts!
My favorite part might be the third attempt, when baby clearly attempts to vocalize the “ahhh” but nothing comes out. (There’s a lot of complexity here for such a little one.)
Just fantastic. Way to build that brain, Mom! 🧠

There is nothing babies love more than faces.
And this is doubly true for those of their most significant caregivers.
Watch how mesmerized this little one is by her mother - and how carefully she studies the shape and movement of Mom’s face as she serenades her.
Turns out, babies have very specific preferences here.
Research suggests that newborns prefer looking at faces that are:
- socially relevant to them (faces with direct gaze compared to faces with averted gaze),
- happy faces compared to neutral facial expressions,
- and, even shortly after birth, already strongly favor their mother’s face to that of a stranger.
So always look for opportunities to sit face-to-face. There’s nothing your baby would rather look at than YOU.

Lovely to see the fun this family are having and the understanding of this little one 🥰
Check out this little comedian. 🥸
Not long ago I fielded a question about how to interpret a newborn’s smiles and laughter - noting that (at three days old) these behaviors were probably more reflexive than intentional.
In doing so, I also made a promise: that meaningful smiles and laughter would be just around the corner. And that once they arrive you really couldn’t miss them.
Which brings us to this little joker.
You only get a quick glimpse of the game he’s playing with his grandfather, but what you’re watching is the pair using rapid changes in their facial expressions to make one another laugh.
And boy, is it effective!
Watch as our hero goes from delighted to completely straight faced at the drop of a hat. His serious face makes grandpa laugh and this brings out some of the biggest baby grins you’ll ever see.
It’s clear that this little guy is engaging in humor on purpose - and takes real pleasure in making his family laugh.
He’s just the right age as well.
At about 9 months, babies begin developing “theory of mind” - or the ability to begin envisioning a situation from the viewpoint of another.
I’d say he has a pretty good sense of what will make his grandpa guffaw. Wouldn’t you agree?

I see reports referring to "children and young people" as if childhood starts at age 10.
Yet, the science is screaming that we need to focus on pregnancy and the first few years to prevent a range of poorer lifetime outcomes.

This Infant Mental Health Awareness Week, let's not just talk about making healthier, happier grown ups.
Let's also remember that babies are people whose experiences and feelings matter, and who have a right to the best possible health, including mental health.
