User data is routinely commoditised today, and passing a law assuming compliance and waiting for complaints or litigation will not suffice. As the DPDP Act comes into effect, the government must finance, build, and sustain an ecosystem that allows every health worker to comply and patients to be able to better access care.

AIIMS New Delhi has always received appreciation as a solid public good. But is its appeal really so universal? Did the Indian public really "want" something like AIIMS in the 1950s? We'll never know, but this article attempts to provide some answers:

Will capping trade margins on 137 #cancer drugs actually lower #medical bills? My recent story in @timesofindia examines the risk that #hospitals could offset lower #drug margins with higher charges for diagnostics, consumables or procedures. Lower drug prices don’t automatically mean cheaper cancer care. The move requires strict monitoring & implementation across all stakeholders.

MoHFW issued this notification on Pharma Marketing Code of Conduct .
Some questions need to be asked , observations have to be shared, as important stakeholder :
- This is NOT a committee with wide stakeholders.
- It must have representatives from pharma, consumer forums, patient safety groups, inter connected regulators (regulators for hcare services) etc in committees.
- How can the committee have only hospital representsrive ? Where are the Medical Associations.
Fairness is what is needed from Ministries, Govts, Regulators when creating such commitees.
- How will the stakeholders, general public know which stakehokders are consulted, what are their names etc.
Transparency , Governance should start from the top first !

Well, I found this website called scholargps that ranks scientists by theme. It’s so easy to see why it’s a flawed one and only seeks to inflate one’s ego. I’m ranked #2 in #globaloncology

ECHS had been a problem because of payment backlog with private hospitals. I don’t know if that got sorted though. ECHS is also no longer the cash cow it was for private hospitals like Fortis. The inflexibility in the policy is also a problem. This ensured we opted for the normal route for treatment for my father when he was diagnosed with cancer. He needed to be admitted for 7 days for his pre-phase chemo but ECHS did not allow more than one night hospitalisation. Lots of shrugs and “it is what it is” all around. That is what one gets for a life time of service. I can understand how bitter other families might just feel.
My husband took my 90 year old mother-in-law to the Emergency at @fortis_hospital at around 8 pm on Sunday (24th Oct). She was delirious and her BP was touching 210 which seemed alarming. The emergency doctor attended to her as did someone from Gastro. She underwent a CT scan and the lady doctor who saw her mentioned that they would need to put her in the ICU and investigate as they were not sure where the problem was and would need a couple of days to stabilize her. It is 1 AM now; my husband is still waiting for a bed. The reception tells him to check with the emergency doctor; the emergency doctor says there are no beds and sends him back to reception. Now, the emergency doctor has the audacity to tell my husband in a very off hand manner that he should take my MIL to another hospital with a referral letter.
We go to hospitals when there is a problem; the least we expect is some empathy. Is it because my MIL is the wife of a late army officer and is empanelled in ECHS? Is this how families of retired armed forces officers are treated? We have been visiting this hospital for over 30 years and the service standards have become pathetic. I am told that no senior person is around to address this issue.

Indian Hospitals and Private Equity: Healthy for Patients?
If healthcare is so lucrative that global private equity firms are willing to write cheques of Rs 13,000–14,000 crore for a single mid-sized Indian hospital chain, why is the Indian government still reluctant to invest at scale?
Public health expenditure in India remains stubbornly low — around 1.4–1.8 per cent of GDP in recent National Health Accounts estimates, far short of the National Health Policy 2017 target of 2.5 per cent by 2025.
The Centre’s own allocation hovers near 0.26–0.28 per cent of GDP.

A committee for ‘unethical’ pharma marketing ?The new NMC ethics code recommended compulsory use of generic names in prescription as one way out. Drs were up in arms. The entire code was withdrawn! If the umpire is not strict both teams will continue to cheat. Will anything chahe?
Centre sets up a 3-member panel, chaired by NITI Aayog member Dr M Srinivas, with former Union health secretary Preeti Sudan and Medanta chairman Dr Naresh Trehan, after the Supreme Court flagged the failure of existing rules to curb unethical pharma marketing, including inducements to doctors and promotion of irrational, high-priced drugs.

The Centre has flagged data gaps and regulatory hurdles in curbing steep hospital mark-ups on medicines and consumables, saying it needs to establish the extent of margins before considering wider price controls. The Centre already fixes ceiling prices for scheduled medicines and has limited annual price increases for non-scheduled drugs upto 10%. It has also decided to cap trade margins on certain anti-cancer medicines at 30% of the maximum retail price (MRP). Extending similar controls to other medicines and hospital consumables, officials said, would require further analysis and consultation. @MoHFW_INDIA @JPNadda @nppa_india
