Replying to @RabbiElieAbadie
@RabbiElieAbadie describes to This Is Beirut the isolation of Lebanon’s remaining Jews, many of whom keep their identity private out of fear for their safety. With no functioning community or religious services, many remain disconnected from one another, uncertain whom they can trust.  Watch the full interview: thisisbeirut.com.lb/features…

In an interview with This Is Beirut, @RabbiElieAbadie recounts how his family fled Lebanon after his father and two other rabbis were publicly accused of helping Jews escape to Israel. Amid growing fears for their safety and the Jewish community, his family realized they could no longer remain in the country.  Watch the full interview here: thisisbeirut.com.lb/features…

In an exclusive interview with This is Beirut, @RabbiElieAbadie explains how fleeing Lebanon as a child and later serving as a rabbi in the UAE shaped his hopes for peace between Lebanon and Israel. He argues that lasting peace must extend beyond governments to people-to-people ties.

The October 20-22 Israeli-Lebanese military talks at U.S. Central Command "are expected to address the tactical hurdles facing the June Trilateral Framework agreement," write @haningdr and @MajdBHarb. ‼️ Making Lebanon’s Pilot Zones Work at the Tampa Talks and Beyond. It was a pleasure to co-author this latest Policy Watch with Lebanese legal expert @MajdBHarb - we provide legal solutions to the private property searches, debunk some of the excuses behind disarmament delays, and offer policy recommendations to move the #LAF from deployment to disarmament. washingtoninstitute.org/poli…

"Private property" is an excuse, not an explanation - and as @haningdr and @MajdBHarb write here, there are eminently workable solutions. ‼️ On the case against Lebanon’s ambassador to the United States, Nada Hamadeh Moawad: ▪️Judge Claude Ghanem, the government commissioner to the Military Court, has decided to shelf the case brought by Hezbollah’s lawyer Hassan Bazzi. ▪️Shelving is not closing. Technically, it’s still on a shelf and when/if things change, the case can still be brought up and used against her. ▪️The problem is two fold: 1- The law that criminalizes communication between Lebanese and Israelis HAS TO BE AMENDED! It’s not the first or last time it’ll be used against Lebanese. 2- The military court has no business dealing with civilians. This HAS TO STOP. It’s not the first or last time the court will go after civilians. ▪️Trust me, I’ve been there. Got a six month prison sentence for speaking on a panel 🙄

‼️ On Hezbollah’ announcement of Aid Packages - Let’s do the math: ▪️More than 300,000 people remain displaced in Lebanon. How far would Hezbollah’s reported $200 million from Iran actually go? ▪️Assuming four people per family, that is roughly 75,000 families. Providing each with the announced $12,000–$14,000 package would require $900 million–$1.05 billion. ▪️Even if the reported Iranian funding is available—a claim Washington disputes—and every dollar reaches displaced families, it covers only about one-fifth of that estimated need. ▪️Hezbollah can’t afford to spend a billion dollars on aid even if they have it. They have more pressing priorities. ▪️The promised payments cover rent and furniture, spread over a year. This is NOT reconstruction aid. ▪️This is not the first time Hezbollah has promised compensation and faltered on delivery. Earlier payments were delayed or suspended, leaving families waiting, homeless, and very angry. ▪️Hezbollah has been bleeding supporters and voters. And they know how disillusioned the Shia community is. This is just their way to buy time, hoping Iran recovers financially one way or another.

‼️Very interesting numbers here - on what the Lebanese #Shia think of #Hezbollah, #Iran, and the #LAF. Main takeaway: the Shia in #Lebanon do not want Hezbollah and its weapons to dictate their lives anymore. They want the State! This could be a huge opportunity to split the Shia from Iran for good - the State needs to stop treating the Shia as a synonymous to Hezbollah, and start disarmament and dismantlement.
Lebanon Statistics surveyed 800 Lebanese Shiite citizens across different regions of the country to assess their views on Hezbollah, their trust in the group and its weapons, and their confidence in the Lebanese Army.
