It was relatively easy to train LLMs by scraping the entire Internet for language training data. There is no analogous data scrape that would allow ASI to simulate human biology in sufficient detail that longevity research would dramatically accelerate. All reasonable people want longevity research to succeed. But the best way forward is to invest in actual longevity research. Not to hold our breath for AI to magically 'solve biology'.

The change was deliberate on Denis Villeneuve’s part to turn Chani into the film’s moral compass and force the audience to experience Paul’s rise as a tragedy rather than a triumph. In the novel she largely supports him and fades into the background once the war escalates; Villeneuve rewrote her as a skeptical, independent Fremen fighter who rejects the Bene Gesserit-planted prophecy and actively resists both Jessica’s religious manipulation and Paul’s embrace of the Lisan al-Gaib role. By filtering the climax through her eyes—especially her rejection of the political marriage to Irulan and her final departure into the desert—the movie makes clear that Paul’s “victory” is the start of a holy war he once claimed to oppose. Villeneuve has said the shift brings the adaptation closer to Frank Herbert’s original intent. Herbert was frustrated that many readers treated Paul as a straightforward hero and wrote Dune Messiah partly to correct that reading; by giving Chani a voice of dissent throughout Part Two, the film embeds that cautionary note immediately instead of waiting for a sequel. It also keeps her from disappearing into Paul’s shadow, gives the love story real dramatic stakes, and foregrounds the story’s warnings about charismatic leaders, colonial messianism, and the cost of power.
In the book Dune, Chani is a supporter of Paul and an ally of Lady Jessica. In the 2024 movie, her character is rewritten so that she opposes Lady Jessica and Paul’s ascendancy. What is the purpose of this change?

🚨 Inside the Largest Government Funded Human Trafficking Ring in History: Your tax dollars trafficked over 300,000 children across the United States while NGOs enriched themselves with millions of dollars. One NGO received $895 million to traffic children across the US. Others got $100+ million, and NGOs in areas like Tucson, Arizona pocketed millions but now receive nothing since the border shut down. In this video we break down the contracts, speak with former Border Patrol, and confront the NGOs. It’s a must watch, like it and share it. Make sure no one forgets the hundreds of children lost in the government’s hands.

If only there were some way to prevent Californians from immigrating and ruining Texas.
Idiot liberal moves from a blue state (because it sucks to live in) to a red state(because it’s great to live in) and then votes to turn it into a blue state. Incredible.

Every parent wants a happy child. So we built MDD-PGT, the first genetic predictor of depression for embryo screening. Kids with a lower MDD-PGT tend to sleep better, fight less and enjoy jokes more. With 10 embryos, picking the lowest-risk one cuts depression risk by over 40%.

Tetrachromacy in humans. Because of the Y chromosome only develops in women. Minimal data on how common. Estimate is fewer than 1% of women develop it. I seem to recall it's fairly common even standard in some monkey species.
Tetrachromacy - Seeing 100 Million Colors Some women carry a fourth type of cone cell in their retinas, potentially letting them distinguish up to 100 million colors - a hundred times more than the average person. Most never know they have it, because the world gives them nothing to compare against. There is a hidden sense, living unnoticed inside ordinary vision.

Microbes are turning end of life oilfields into hydrogen bioreactors! pump microbes into depleted oil wells where they convert leftover oil into hydrogen that flows back up the same wells. Modeled cost is as low as $0.56 per kg, versus about $1.50 for hydrogen from natural gas and $4 to $7 from electrolysis. Bio is eating the world? chemengonline.com/microbial-…

The USA has already fallen, you only have to pay attention to the central fact that extractive economic institutions have been completely displacing inclusive (free-market) ones, as evidenced by the massive over-the-top government debt and it's 'choosing (economic) winners'.
This is a brilliant essay and THE question that every American should ask before voting. Thank you @timcdaughtry for posting this. Longevity. Very promising line for investigation -- Vaccines to stimulate the immune system. Large N research in Africa, Live Attenuated V's train-up immune system, associates with significantly lower all-cause mortality. (.. @StabellBenn et al work.)

Remember yearners: Harry Potter and Malfoid is intrinsically Arthurian Legend in tone. What does that mean? It means that the story has certain requirements for consistency: 1. The hero is righteous. While he can be flawed, the hero seeks to bring order to chaos and provide safety and stability to the ones he loves. He has ideals that are never violated, even if they are forgotten due to human weakness. 2. The true love is pure. She may make mistakes, poorly communicate, or just act foolish but her love is never tarnished. She make make errors, but the love of the hero is not overcome by them. 3. The friends are just as important as the hero, and have their own stories. You cannot rob the hero of his men at arms, and harem fanfics are all filth. 4. The core message is Hope. I hope this helps #malfoid

Again and again I am reminded of Odysseus killing the household slave women who had consorted with the suitors. Forgiveness is usually weakness. Don't get sloppy. Finish the job. Put your house in order. Patrilineage revenge stories saturate Greek myth. So think of the future.
People these days are addicted to feeling virtuous--as opposed to being virtuous--and it makes them feel virtuous to forgive. So they forgive even when it's wrong to do so. Please think.

I think most of you most have forgotten that the Emperor gives Arrakis to House Atreides as a trap, the planet is the only source of the valuable spice melange, so control brings great wealth and power. Duke Leto’s House is growing too popular and strong, threatening the Emperor, who cannot openly attack a respected Great House without angering the Landsraad He therefore colludes with the Harkonnens: he transfers Arrakis from them to the Atreides as an apparent honor, then lets the Harkonnens (backed by disguised Imperial troops) destroy the Atreides under the cover of their old feud before returning the planet. Leto knows it is likely a trap but must accept or face charges of treason. He hopes to secure Arrakis and ally with the Fremen in time, yet the Atreides arrive on a sabotaged, hostile world, yueh’s betrayal allows the attack to succeed, wiping out most of House Atreides while the Emperor avoids direct blame Correct me if i’m wrong pleaseeee!

Nolan's Odyssey probably due to Stephen Fry's version integrating much later stories including one about Odysseus sobbing about the war atrocities in the sack of Troy. Zero of that in the Homer's original. It's inconsistent with the killing of the household slave women in the O.

Dune is ultimately an attack on humanity’s obsession with saviours, and somehow, millions of fans still fall into the exact trap Frank Herbert designed. The Bene Gesserit manufactured a messiah. The Fremen embraced a prophecy. Paul exploited both. And an entire galaxy paid the price. The terrifying part isn’t that Paul became a tyrant. It’s that people willingly surrendered their judgment because they desperately wanted someone extraordinary to save them. If Dune has taught us anything, it’s that the most dangerous person in the universe might be the one everyone believes was born to save it.
Some LOTR fans aren’t ready to admit that Dune belongs on the same pedestal, because apparently fantasy greatness must come with a traditional hero and a happy ending. Dune builds an entire civilisation around politics, religion, power and manipulation. Its protagonist becomes a messiah, leads millions into fanaticism, and leaves billions dead in his wake. LOTR makes you believe in the hero. Dune makes you question the hero, the prophecy and the people worshipping him. Both are masterpieces, but Dune dares to challenge everything its audience wants to believe. So let’s settle this: Is LOTR genuinely superior to Dune, or has nostalgia made people afraid to admit they’re equals?
