When the New York Times at last decided to accept the honorific "Ms.," Gloria Steinem had a good line: "I no longer have to be 'Miss Steinem of Ms. magazine.'"

I was born in 1971, the year before Gloria Steinem helped launch Ms. magazine. It’s hard to explain to younger women what Ms. meant to those of us who grew up with it. It showed us women who were questioning the rules, challenging power, and refusing to accept that the world simply had to stay the way it was. Gloria helped make that kind of woman visible and possible. After Kamala Harris lost the presidential election, I was invited to Gloria’s home with a small group of women. We were angry, exhausted, and trying to figure out what came next. By then, Gloria had spent more than half a century doing this: bringing women together in her home to talk, organize, strategize, argue, and figure out how to keep going. And she was still doing exactly that until just before she died. Because Gloria understood something fundamental about women and activism: movements are built in living rooms. Women activists of my generation inherited so much from Gloria Steinem: a world in which a woman allowed themselves to be outspoken, ambitious, political, angry, strategic, and powerful. There is a direct line from women like Gloria, who insisted on taking up space when women were expected to stay quiet, to women like me who were able to build organizations, lead movements, and demand change. Gloria Steinem helped make my activism and the activism of millions of women possible. Not just by breaking barriers herself, but by creating space for generations of women to come through behind her.

Beyoncé pays tribute to Dolly Parton: “Dolly, you were the barometer. The North Star. Bold and brilliant. Talented and tenacious. You taught so many lessons on how to be uniquely oneself. I am grateful for your art, your heart, your generosity, your humor, your entrepreneurship. I’m honored that I had the privilege to work with you. I will treasure that forever. Thank you for your profound impact on the world. You are an angel who has made this world a happier place because of your joyful art. You are truly one of one. Rest peacefully.”

Read @abbyvesoulis @MotherJones 'motherjones.com/politics/202… Then read replies to @davidfrum xitter.cf/davidfrum/status/20854… Speaking as someone who as a child WOULD NOT GO TO BED without a certain stuffed koala, and who remembers everything her parents put up with to ensure that happened 💖
There are literally thousands of fathers reading those tweets and thinking, "When my daughter lost her favorite toy, I led a search party as if for a downed NATO nuclear warhead. And when that failed, I paid $300 for a replica on EBay."

This is all so sickening.
Welp. It’s happening. Bulldozers and heavy equipment arrived in Big Bend National Park today. The most rugged, pristine lands in the lower 48. Trump’s border wall is coming. CBP is refusing to inform residents, park superintendents, landowners, business owners, or Texas legislators what is happening. What we know is that they are now paving new roads where there were none, erecting fencing and walls to protect those roads, and then planning to install technology and border patrol agents in an area where close to zero people ever cross the border. Ironically, depressingly, they will be spending billions of dollars to destroy this pristine American land while literally making it easier to access, which means easier for coyotes and border crossers to actually traverse the region if they wanted to. Before this, there were no roads, just desserts, cliffs, and cacti, which made it all but impassable. A few miles upstream, the first border barriers the administration just erected were washed away in the first flood of the season — not even a bad one — but hundreds of millions of dollars wasted, literally floating down the Rio Grande. A few miles downstream, near Eagle Pass, razor wire and debris are washing up ashore from the first floods there, making this critical water source inaccessible for Texans or any wildlife enthusiasts. Right now, as we speak, $4 billion is flowing to contractors in Trump’s orbit to cut Texans, including me and my family, off from the most critical water source in the state. All for what? Big Bend is 25% of the patrolled southwest border and accounts for less than 1% of all border crossings. Border towns, businesses, tourism — all about to be destroyed. Nevermind the irreversible wildlife damage, the feds stealing land from private citizens via eminent domain, and all the money wasted that could go to actual solutions to secure the border or support these communities. Ever since I first visited my family here when I was 13 years old I wanted to make a life in West Texas. Three years ago, after so much hard work and planning, I spent my savings on building a home there. One I hoped my son would inherit. A home in one of the most beautiful, rugged, untouched, places in the country. Also one of the safest. Now, everything that makes this special place special is being upended — for an illogical, wasteful, stupid plan that won't work and won't help the country. A genuine gut punch. So depressing.

Graham Platner should obviously drop out and I think he will drop out, but jesus christ, men -- if you've raped, abused, or otherwise badly mistreated women or anyone in the past, can you please just sit out running for office? Even if you believe you've changed, maybe work on a campaign or help someone you believe in, but perhaps one cost of your bad behavior is that you don't get to hold a position of extraordinary power.

Today, I signed an Executive Order temporarily repealing bedtimes in the City of New York so that kids of all ages can watch our team in the NBA Finals. As Mayor, you’re forced to make many difficult decisions. This was not one of them. Go Knicks.

Barney Frank was one of a kind. For more than three decades in Congress, he fought tirelessly for the people of Massachusetts, helped make housing more affordable, stood up for the rights of LGBTQ+ Americans, and helped pass one of the most sweeping financial reforms in history designed to protect consumers and prevent another financial crisis. Barney’s passion and wit were second to none, and our thoughts are with his family today.

This person should not be anywhere near public office Every new statement is somehow crazier and more vile than the last
TX-35 Democratic candidate Maureen Galindo says she will convert ICE detention center in Karnes County into an internment camp for "American Zionists." "It will also be a castration processing center for pedophiles, which will probably be most of the Zionists," she added.

I filed a damaged tree report w @nyc311 631 days ago. Still no reply. I tweeted @ShahanaFromBK today. She replied in 12 seconds. So far, her response rate is [checks math] ~4.5 million times faster than the city. Thanks, Shahana! P.S. @nyc311 *is* normally more on the ball.

Hi @nyc311. I created this work request for a broken tree branch *more than a year and a half ago.* The broken branches are still there and I’m concerned that they are dangerous. I have also called about it and referenced the order. What can I do to escalate this?
