Today, Vicky Sebastian did her beautiful daughter Elise incredibly proud. She gave evidence with courage, dignity and a strength no mother should ever have been forced to find. She spoke about the failures in Elise’s care, the inadequate observations, the falsified records and the devastating failure of the Trust’s own investigation to uncover the truth. Elise was only 16 years old. She was a child placed in the care of services that were meant to protect her. Vicky should never have had to become an investigator into her own daughter’s death. She should never have had to fight through records, challenge official accounts and carry the burden of exposing failures that those responsible should have identified themselves. But today she stood for Elise. She made sure her daughter was seen, heard and remembered as the precious young person she was—not reduced to a file, a statistic or another apology. The Inquiry must now confront the hardest questions. How were observation records falsified? Why was vital evidence not properly examined? Why did the Trust’s investigation fail so badly? And who will finally be held accountable? Vicky spoke with a mother’s love and a determination that the truth about Elise will not be buried. She did Elise proud today.
