In a 2012 interview, Flora MacDonald reminisced about getting involved in the Vietnamese boat people project along with her great friend Marion Dewar (then Mayor of Ottawa).
A very uplifting story. 🥹

Accepting tens of thousands of Vietnamese boat people was one of the best, most compassionate decisions this country ever made…they have enriched this country in so many ways…and the decision was made by the short-lived govt of Joe Clark #cdnpoli

There’s no mystery behind Mayor Olivia Chow’s budget record. Just math that is readily available for all to see in 100's of pdf's available on line. The budget is public.
The candidates complaining about the increases should tell us what they plan to cut: Of the $882 million in new spending under Chow, about 30%, or $266 million, went to an increase in the police budget. Libraries are now open on Sundays. Crisis response teams now work alongside police to help people in distress on the street. Traffic agents. Wheel trans to improve accessible transit.
There is also proof in the pudding: less homelessness in Toronto (8%) at a time when everywhere else in the Province there have been surges (23% Province-wide). Spending strategically and surgically, and measuring outcomes, has been working. We need more of this, not less.
If candidates have a beef with spending, they should point out what they would cut, specifically.

Every Canadian gets a pamphlet in their mail, every 6 months for MAID.
If you don’t fill it out and send it back in time, unqualified volunteers come to your house on snowshoes, tie you down with moosegut cords, and kill you by suffocation with a beaver tail.
True story.
🚨 CANADA: No oncologist yet — but a MAID pamphlet arrived
Kristin Logan: “I hadn’t even seen an oncologist yet before I got that pamphlet.”
“As I’m waiting for even the first call from the oncology team, I get this pamphlet in the mail basically telling me that I can go and kill myself.”
“At that point you realize what a DYSTOPIAN situation it is.”

Do Not Pass Go exclusive: Loblaw wants a seat at the table setting Canada's AI rules and has been lobbying hard for it. According to documents acquired through an Access to Information request, the company requested to join the federal government's AI Strategy Task Force last year and has lobbied officials – including Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne – at least 17 times since then on "privacy and access to information" matters.
The documents also reveal the company is integrating AI into its business in numerous ways, including personalized product matching, though Loblaw denies it engages in surveillance pricing.

Obviously tariffs aren’t good for the economy.
But wishing Canadians would just simmer down in response to threats to our sovereignty isn’t just wearing economics-only blinders, it’s hoping that which makes us a resilient liberal democracy would just be quiet.
