Freedom Is A Constant Struggle by Angela Y Davis. Great collection of essays and speeches about the connections between liberation struggles. Examines state violence, the prison industrial complex, Palestine, Black freedom movements and antiapartheid movements.
We Still Here by @marclamonthill. Written early on in the pandemic, it looks at the pre-existing inequalities and injustices across America that Covid amplified and took advantage of.
Bad Fat Black Girl by @BadFatBlackGirl I now strongly believe that every book should have an accompanying Spotify playlist. Loved this book. All about sexism, fatphobia and capitalism, through the lens of trap. open.spotify.com/playlist/4l…
Burning My Roti by @sharandhaliwal_ The book I’ve recommended to peeps the most this month. Her memoir about her experiences as a queer Indian woman. Sex, body image, family, mental health and cultural identity. And a whollllle journey of self love along the way. It’s great.
We’re all living in a simulation. Reality+ by David J Chalmers. Massive book, that led to a massive existential personal crisis. Nothing is real. What is real? It’s all real? Never read so many pages and come away knowing even less than when I began.
American Born Chinese by @geneluenyang. Gorgeous graphic novel about being a first generation child Chinese immigrant in an American school with only three Asian students. Disney+ just bought the rights to it, with Michelle Yeoh in a lead role.
Prison By Any Other Name by @MayaSchenwar about how much heralded alternatives to prison (electronic monitoring, house arrest, extended probation, mandated treatment centers) are all widening the net of the prison industrial complex instead of offering genuine reform.
Been to Ronnies so many times, but the one I never shut about is, of course, getting to see @ladygaga do an impromptu gig there after her Royal Albert Hall performance got cancelled. And she bloody replied to me on the twits. Best night ever. Worst hangover ever.
