Very sad to read of Barenboim’s withdrawal from performing due to his deteriorating health. Among many memories I remember him signing an autograph using my back to rest the programme on when I was 10. Can’t remember not listening to his music making.

Many other occasions spring to mind too, but above all of them the Ring he conducted at the Proms. In particular the Siegfried, one of the greatest musical experiences of my life. A towering musician, of this or any other time.

RIP Bernard Haitink. Certainly one of the very greatest musicians of last 70 years. I’m fortunate to have many unforgettable music memories of his work, the very pinnacle being his Ring at the Albert Hall when the ROH was closed. A great man and and even greater musician.

Extremely excited at the prospect of next year’s Tour recreating stages 17 & 18 of the 1986 Tour, including a summit finish on the Col de Granon, which hasn’t been used since. That stage was the last time that Bernard Hinault wore the yellow jersey. xitter.cf/ammattipyoraily/status…
Ooh, Col du Granon (11.5 km, 9.3 %)... Fingers crossed that would happen next year! Eduardo Chozas took a famous stage win there in 1986 Tour de France. Summit at 2,413 m. #TDF2022
Looking forward to hearing you call the last road stage of the Giro @robhatchtv 😂🤣

Absolutely delighted that Olga Tokarczuk has won the Nobel Prize for Literature. I thought Flights was a genuine masterpiece. Congrats @FitzcarraldoEds!!

So sad to hear that Jessye Norman has died. She had one of the greatest voices of any age. RIP.

This “beauty over structure” thing is still puzzling. In what way is beauty opposed to structure? I would argue that Bruckner’s entire symphonic project was about structure itself being beautiful. Any performance of a Bruckner symphony that ignored structure would be incoherent.

I can’t really put into words my gratitude to Bernard Haitink for all of the times I’ve heard him conduct. I’d estimate at least 40 times. A truly great musician and a great man. The Vienna Philharmonic gave him their very best in Bruckner 7 tonight. A privilege to be there.

There appears to be a typo in the rebel bill. In the required wording for the PM to ask for an extension to A50, it specifies an extension until 11pm BST on January 31st 2020. Unless they’ve buried lede and we’re finally moving to CET as well?
Everything is terrible, but tomorrow I’m taking my mum to hear the penultimate concert of Bernard Haitink’s long and storied career on the podium and I couldn’t be looking forward to it any more.

And if I could have chosen the repertoire myself I couldn’t have done better than Beethoven 4th Piano Concerto and Bruckner 7. With the Vienna Philharmonic! So excited.

Speaking on the phone within the earshot of anyone who has not explicitly opted in to hearing it should be banned, in all public and private spaces.

Baltimore resident Leon Haughton likes to have honey in his tea, so he brought back a few jars from a visit to family in Jamaica. Customs officers seized the honey, and claimed it was liquid meth. He spent 82 days in jail. He lost both his jobs. washingtonpost.com/local/leg…

First time I’ve listened to Haitink’s Mahler 6 with the Berlin Philharmonic from the (mid?) 1990s. It’s astonishingly good. Rivals Boulez’s made in Vienna around the same time.
Not laughing now that I am delayed over two hours in this shithole xitter.cf/higgis/status/11561698…
