I’ve been teaching Macbeth for seven years, and every single year I re-annotate the play scene by scene. Not because I have to, but because I always find myself discovering something new and valuable.
Shakespeare never fails to amaze me

Somehow we've reached a point in education where:
- teaching kids explicitly is controversial
- academic rigour is treated as a threat to student wellbeing
- memorizing math facts is discouraged or considered unnecessary
- practice is dismissed as "drill and kill"
Low expectations are not kindness, and nothing hurts someone's confidence more than falling further behind every year.

Pupil behaviour is essential. The tiny things teachers do to make sure behaviour is good are so important to get right. Here are 10 things I’m currently thinking about and using in all of my lessons. 🧵

And yes, I do believe the friendships you form in your early years are often rooted in proximity, while the ones you form in adulthood are rooted in alignment.

Explicit instruction works when teaching children. Ironically, it’s also very effective for preparing the individuals tasked with teaching children. If a teacher training program or PD doesn’t explicitly teach how to teach, it’s just fluff.

It's been nearly a year since I last published a blog about Mini-Whiteboards and how I feel about them. Since then, as a school, we have done lots of work on routines around our use of MWBs. Have a read of my 2.0 blog to see our Agreed Consistencies around this brilliant classroom tool.
Thanks to @Mr_Raichura for some of the new inspiration around our routines.

There are lots of views about how to improve our education system. Not enough of them focus on the classroom. We pursue big structural solutions, when we should be looking at how to create calm, quiet, peaceful classrooms.

A question I’ve evolved on considerably is students taking notes. I can no longer advocate for, and, in good conscience, ask students to spend significant time, taking notes. If there is something I need students to refer back to later, I’ll put it on a reference page, sheet, slide, or knowledge organizer. And if there is something I need students to remember later without looking back at a reference, we’ll have done enough retrieval practice, spaced over time, interleaved, using varied conditions that the knowledge will be secure in their long-term memory. In other words, if they need to look at it later, I’ll provide them with a good reference. If they need to remember it later, I’ll teach it and they’ll retrieve it until they don’t need to look back.

Adaptive in the moment teaching is so important rather than just moving onto the next slide so I agree with you.
An incredibly useful CPD session this evening with @adamboxer1 on Better Behaviour. Thank you ever so much!!
I’ve taken A LOT away and will be using FLMOP in my classrooms from tomorrow. Excited☺️
what is the point of teaching if you’re teaching to just get through a PowerPoint???
use the lesson outcomes and correct any gaps in learning before you move on. use your professional judgment on re teaching!
someone tell me they agree😭
Breaking down barriers (academic and societal with the topic!) as part of our 19th Century study with 'The Yellow Wallpaper'🟡 Students seeing a challenging text and relishing the step up rather than crumbling is testament to our systems and their resilience 💪 Good start!

Wishing I was fluent in every language just to read their poetry and literature in its truest form without a translation pulling it apart.

ALL school districts need to embrace the one or two really nerdy teachers that read 50 educational books a year or listen to podcasts on a daily or weekly basis. The ones with really good outcomes with their students year after year. I've heard too many stories from teachers on here that they are basically deemed the "difficult" teacher or are just sidelined in their district. Not all schools/districts do this, but far too many. This is a call to admin. It is perfectly fine if a teacher knows far more than you. Listen to them. Learn from them. Appreciate them. Put them in positions to help improve your district. Admin that do this are truly the best. It is about the kids. That is what we are all here for.
